Actress and former Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday, September 15, over her alleged participation in an illicit betting app. ED is investigating an illegal betting app called 1xBet. On Sunday, September 14, ED summoned Urvashi Rautela and Mimi Chakraborty. While Chakraborty arrived today for questioning, Rautela has been scheduled to testify on Tuesday. Notably, 1xBet's Indian ambassador is Urvashi Rautela.
Mimi Chakraborty questioned by ED
The statement made by 36-year-old Mimi Chakraborty is being recorded in accordance with the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act). The ED is interrogating Chakraborty to learn more about her connections to the betting app, which are based on specific endorsements and cash transactions, according to a PTI report.
Several cases involving unlawful betting applications that are accused of defrauding investors and consumers out of crores of rupees or of avoiding a significant amount of taxes are being investigated by the ED.
Celebs under ED lens in 1xBet betting case
Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina, two former cricket players, have already been questioned. Dhawan was interrogated for almost eight hours on September 4.
According to reports, a number of celebrities are being summoned to explain their connections to betting applications, any endorsement fees they may have received, and the means of contact between them.
Real-money online betting has been outlawed by the central government under recent laws.
According to a PTI report that included estimates from market research companies and investigative agencies, there are over 22 crore Indian users of these online betting applications, with roughly 11 crore of them being frequent users.
