Edmonton Oilers forward Vasily Podkolzin will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team after the sudden passing of his father, Alexander, on Tuesday night, the team announced.

The Oilers added that the winger is returning to Russia to be with his family. There is no timeline on his return.

Podkolzin signed a three-year, $8.85 contract extension with the Oilers on Tuesday. The fifth-year NHLer was traded to Edmonton from the Vancouver Canucks ahead of last season and had 24 points over 82 games.

The Oilers play five more pre-season games before their season-opener on Oct. 8.
