Television has never lacked stories about injustice; the challenge, however, has always been to tell them in a way that feels human rather than performative. Released as an eight-episode CBS limited series in 2019, the drama arrived during a national conversation about police violence and systemic racism that, unfortunately, has only grown more urgent. Time hasn’t made its central questions feel dated.
