Allan Alaalatoa had picked him as his breakout player and Charlie Cale didn't disappoint in the opening round of Super Rugby Pacific.

The Brumbies No.8 has a big opportunity for big minutes following Pete Samu's departure and Cale flashed his considerable upside in Friday's 30-3 demolition of the Rebels in Melbourne.

Cale matched teammate Corey Toole with two tries and his foot speed didn't look too far behind the blindingly quick winger.

Big Brumby wins five-way sprint for ‘outstanding’ try

The 23-year-old Dubbo product's sideline kick and regather to score was a remarkable combination of athleticism and self belief.

"He was very good. Any back that can kick and score - always going to be a fan," former Wallabies No.8 turned Randwick coach Stephen Hoiles said on Stan Sport's Between Two Posts.

"He had no right to get around (Rebels flanker) Brad Wilkin because he only had a couple of metres. I've been watching him for a while.

"(The) Kings (School) boy... we (Randwick) played him in a trial game versus the As and then he had a couple of games for the Brumbies last year.

"You can tell he's bigger, he's fitter, he's fast, (Brumbies coach) Stephen Larkham spoke about him post-game. He's that style of footy player. Pete Samu is going to be a huge loss but if you're going to get someone that's close to Pete Samu, he's probably one because he's versatile, he's fast, he's skillful.

"That was outstanding but people that have known his game for a long period of time - and I'm not saying I'm one of them - they're not surprised by that."

Another former Wallaby, Morgan Turinui, also picked Cale as one of his top players from the opening weekend.

"Charlie Cale, go back and have a look at his defensive breakdown work in counter rucking," Turinui said.

"Lineout work and then the two tries."
