Has Omar Khan not delivered what he promised to the Steelers? For years now, the Steelers have felt like a team that could deliver more. But they just end up with a winning season and no championships. The team has long been synonymous with grit, tradition, and a no-nonsense approach to football. But lately, that old-school vibe is starting to feel more like a burden than a badge of honor.
This season, the team is mostly catching heat for not solving their QB crisis. Even with a decent shot at drafting one of the top QB prospects, the Steelers’ front office went ahead and picked Will Howard in the sixth round. That move pretty much showed they’re still holding out hope to hear back from veteran Aaron Rodgers. The Steelers’ decisions are now starting to reflect poorly, especially on GM Omar Khan, who’s now in his third year running the show. When he took over in 2022, he promised a “smooth transition” with “not a lot of change.” But three years in, questions are starting to float about whether that promise ever meant anything.
In fact, on a recent episode of The Herd, Colin Cowherd and former NFL scout John Middlekauff didn’t hold back. Calling out Omar Khan, Cowherd said, “Steelers, they want to win, but then they don’t take care of the number one position. Like I just, I find them, I feel like there’s a messaging issue in the building. And like Omar Khan, my sources don’t consider him a great general manager.” Omar Khan stepped in when former GM Kevin Colbert decided to hang up his boots after a long and successful run. Khan had worked alongside Colbert for nearly two decades before taking over. So expectations were pretty high when he was named the new GM.
Back in 2022, Khan said at his introductory press conference, “Obviously, being in this role, responsibilities shift a little bit, but I’ll have my hands on a lot of things that I’ve done before and, obviously, have my hands in other things… The 90 guys we have in that locker room now, I’m really excited about the future and where I think we can go.” He sparked hope among Steelers fans. Especially since the Ben Roethlisberger era had just ended, and the team was struggling to find its rhythm again.
Well, looking at the picture today, things haven’t exactly gone as smoothly as Khan had hoped.
Omar Khan’s Steelers: Tradition meets tough questions
As Colin Cowherd raised questions about Omar Khan’s leadership, John Middlekauff highlighted the team’s rivals successfully adapting their blueprint. Talking about the Ravens, Middlekauff explained that while the Steelers seem stuck in a loop, clinging to past glories, their rivals have moved beyond just copying their playbook. He explained that ever since the Ravens moved to Baltimore, with Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta shaping the front office, they’ve built a strong, competitive team.
“They (Steelers) became their rival, and they copied the way they did things, like toughness, hardcore guys playing in any environment, the toughest team in the league. And now, over the last decade plus, it’s like we do it better than you.” And it’s not just about winning games; the Ravens have added their flavor to the Steelers’ model. The team has become more open-minded and progressive, especially in scouting and coaching. “If the Ravens were just a regular, run-of-the-mill 10–11 win team, it wouldn’t be such a big deal. But they’ve become a dominant NFL team, especially with Lamar. And that has made the Steelers look a lot worse,” said Middlekauff.
John explained that the Steelers are in a “weird” spot over the past few years. Giving Mike Tomlin his flowers, the former NFL scout said, “Mike Tomlin’s too high-level of a guy. They’re never going to suck.” Then what exactly is the problem with Pittsburgh? Well, Middlekauff thinks that the team needs to get better at its scouting and trading strategies. For years now, Pittsburgh has been picking around 16th to 20th in the draft every year. They never move up to draft top prospects. So with later picks, the team manages to have a well-managed roster, but not a winning roster. “I think that was when Roethlisberger or Antonio Brown, and Le’Veon Bell were their star offensive players. That’s a long time ago, Colin,” added John.
Well, the message is clear: Steel City wants rings now, not just winning seasons. And with pressure mounting, it’s up to Omar Khan to change traditions that might not be working for the team anymore. So, would the Steelers’ GM change things for the team, or will they just stay stuck in limbo? What do you think?
