Steel Ball Run JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime announced for Netflix

Netflix has announced that Steel Ball Run JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is in production and will stream worldwide.

Yasuhiro Kimura and Hideya Takahashi direct the anime. Toshiyuki Kato serves as series director. Yasuko Kobayashi writes the series composition. Daisuke Tsumagari designs the characters and leads animation direction, while Yugo Kanno composes the music and Yoshikazu Iwanami directs the sound. David Production produces the animation.

The series adapts Hirohiko Araki’s manga Steel Ball Run, set in 19th-century America during the first cross-continental horse race. Johnny Joestar, a former jockey left paraplegic, teams up with outlaw Gyro Zeppeli to race across the continent.

Araki launched JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1986. The franchise has sold over 120 million copies worldwide. Its unique art, poses, and sound effects define its style. The success has led to anime, live-action films, games, and musicals. Araki is currently serializing the ninth part, The JOJOLands, in Ultra Jump.

Director Yasuhiro Kimura said, “STEEL BALL RUN is a story that depicts characters running through a grand race, staking their own beliefs. My heart is pounding with excitement to be entrusted with directing this anime adaptation.”

He continued, “The entire staff shares this feeling and is pouring their passion into daily production. I look forward to sharing our enthusiasm for this work with all of you and hope we can ride this journey together.”

The project forms part of Netflix Japan’s 10th anniversary lineup, which also includes Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? starring Cannes best actor winner Koji Yakusho, and Straight to Hell, a biographical drama about fortune-teller Kazuko Hosoki.

Netflix will share more details about Steel Ball Run on September 23.
