Netflix Finally Finds Its Answer to HBO’s Heated Rivalry With New TV Show Order

Netflix is looking to score another sports romance hit. The streamer has ordered a new TV project that could appeal to viewers who enjoyed HBO‘s Heated Rivalry. The upcoming series will combine professional sports, romance, and emotional drama, but will shift the focus from hockey to basketball.

According to Deadline, Netflix is developing Hoops, a series based on Kennedy Ryan‘s bestselling trilogy. The books combine professional basketball, romance, personal growth, and second-chance relationships. The project could give Netflix another sports-focused romance aimed at a similar audience to Heated Rivalry.

The similarities between the two shows are particularly notable because both put romance at the center of professional sports stories. Heated Rivalry follows hockey players, while Hoops will focus on the basketball world. Both also explore intense relationships and the personal challenges faced by their characters. However, the two projects are based on different book series and have their own stories and characters.

What else do we know about Netflix’s Hoops show so far?

The Hoops trilogy consists of Long Shot, Block Shot, and Hook Shot. The first book follows Iris DuPree and professional basketball player August West. Their relationship develops as Iris deals with a difficult situation in her personal life. The story combines romance with themes of healing and overcoming trauma.

Block Shot shifts its focus to another romance within the same basketball world. The trilogy concludes with Hook Shot, which continues the interconnected stories of its characters. The books combine professional basketball with romance and themes of personal growth.

Adrian Dukes will write and executive produce the series. Will Packer, Sabrina Wind, Chris Paul, CJ Paul, Jacqueline Taylor, Ryan, and Baker-Simmons will also executive produce. Netflix is still developing the adaptation, and the streamer has not announced a cast or release date. The project also does not have a confirmed episode count or production schedule yet.

For now, the adaptation marks Netflix’s move into Ryan’s basketball-focused romance catalog
