Netflix fans are in for a treat as Austrian thriller, Woman of the Dead, returns for a second season with six heart-pounding episodes to sink your teeth into.

The show (called Tontenfrau in its original language) synopsis reads: ‘In a vengeful quest to find out who killed her husband, a woman ends up exposing her small community’s deepest and ugliest secrets.’

The first season was released in 2022 and quickly gathered plenty of praise from fans who dubbed the show ‘dark and brutal’.

It’s set in a picturesque part of the Austrian landscape – the Tyrolean Alps – which is renowned for its majestic peaks and stunning views all year round.

‘Anna Maria Muhe is outstanding, as she is in everything that I have seen her perform in,’ Rotten Tomatoes user Karl L shared.

‘Dark, riveting, lots of unpredictable surprises. Set in a beautiful part of Austria. Good acting. Highly recommend,’ Lena A added.

‘Having a female protagonist who is full of surprises makes this series irresistible. I never knew what was going to happen next which is always a plus for me. The beautiful scenery added to the ambiance,’ Georgan G echoed.

‘Suspenseful, thrilling and just the right amount of creepiness! A great story of extreme male misogyny, female revenge & corporate greed. You even begin to think it could really happen!’ Mike G teased.

‘A dark tale with more than a few twists and turns along the way. It reminds us that we all have skeletons in our closets that we try very hard to keep in the dark and not expose them to the light,’ Michael G agreed.

‘I just finished watching Woman Of The Dead on Netflix. Oh boy!! The woman went on a revenge tour and she did not miss,’ X user @XYZeze shared.

The second season picks up two year after the season one finale and has been called ‘as dark and brutal as the first’ by @heavenofhorror.

As for critics reviews, Decider wrote: ‘The Woman Of The Dead is a pretty straightforward thriller, but with a spectacular backdrop and a lead character with a tragic backstory and some personality quirks, it’s definitely worth a look.’

And website ButWhyTho called it an ‘impressively tense and disturbing tale’.

The show may not be for everyone, however, and has been criticised by some for the plot ‘meandering and getting lost at times’ and occasionally devolving into ‘so many crossed plotlines’.

Foreign language thrillers set in breathtaking locations have proved a massive success for Netflix.

Swedish crime drama series The Åre Murders, notched up 11 million views in just one week when it arrived on the streamer earlier this year.

The Nordic noir follows Hanna Ahlander (Carla Sehn), a Stockholm detective suspended from duty, who seeks solace in the idyllic but eerie ski resort town of Åre.

Woman of the Dead seasons one and two are available to stream on Netflix now.
