Nelly Korda came into Chevron with two thoughts inside her head. One, that she was the defending champion at the Woodlands, Texas, having won her first major last year at the same stage. Two, she hasn’t won a title this season despite having five starts, a stark contrast to her exploits last season. So the question in everybody’s mind was how she was going to fare at the first major on the circuit this season?
Disappointing is the right answer, especially considering the high standards she had set last year. Korda finished T14 at the event with a score of 2 under par. She had a rough start, carding 5 over par on day 1, and spent the remaining four rounds trying to recover from the high-scoring first round. In fact, at one point it looked like she might not even make the cutline, but a great performance on day 2 was enough to get over the hump. “I just had to dig deep. I had nothing to lose. You have nothing to lose, so may as well just fire at it,” Korda explained about her second-round performance.
After the Chevron Championship, despite the tough outing, Korda had gotten amongst the fans and thanked them for their support by signing autographs. One fan took to Instagram to share what the World No.1 did, being highly appreciative of the gesture from the LPGA pro. The fan also added a note that read, “Thank you, @nellykorda for being so kind!!! She was out for at least an hour signing.”
Korda reposted the story and added a note herself. In the note, she mentioned giving away her stuff as well, mainly her shoes and hat, but she refused to give away her socks, which was a bizarre request. “Said yes to signing & giving away my shoes and hat… said no to my socks tho.” She did make a few more fans for life with her warm gestures at the end of the tournament. However, the World No.1 was in for a surprise as well.
Just like how she made the day for her fans, her day was made when she received a thoughtful gift during her exploits at the first major of the season.
Chevron gives Nelly Korda a thoughtful gift
Nelly Korda has been very candid about her love for Legos. The toys have hooked her to them as she made it clear that they are part of her golf routine as well. Speaking at the JM Eagle LA Championship, Korda explained how Legos have been a sort of great distracting presence for her during tournaments. The two-time Major winner explained, “I have always loved Legos. I actually started earlier this year. It is just another way to get your mind off things.”
And her Lego love found some sort of solace at the Chevron Championship when the organizers gave her a bouquet. How is that related to Legos, you ask? Well, the bouquet was one fashioned out of Legos, Korda’s favorite pastime.
In the reel that was subsequently shared by the Chevron Championship’s official page, the World No.1 was seen to be extremely delighted to have received the gift. The caption stated, “We support the @lego obsession.” Korda was extremely appreciative of the gesture from the committee. She stated, “I love it, I did Spiderman this week!”
The new set should help her stay focused on the next task at hand, i.e., to earn a much-deserved victory on the Tour this year, as soon as possible. Do you think Nelly Korda could break her duck with a victory in the coming month of May?
