Tetris Effect – an unforgettable experience (Enhance Games)

A reader explains how a series of console breakdowns and lost passwords ended up with him experiencing the majesty that it is Tetris Effect on PlayStation VR.

OK, so I need to put some context into this before I go into the meat of the matter.

I’m an aging, old school retro gamer. I don’t own a PlayStation 5, in fact I never owned a PlayStation 4 until just before Christmas, when my generous brother-in-law donated one to me.

I traditionally buy Nintendo consoles for the quality of the titles, so I kind of bypassed the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One era with my Wii U.

I do, however, own an Xbox Series S with a broken HDMI port, which I’m still debating whether it’s worth the money to get fixed.

About four years ago, for some reason, I bought a Meta Quest 2. The whole Facebook online thing didn’t bother me, I just came up with a pseudo account and started playing, although ironically the day it arrived was the day the servers went down.

I had a lot of fun with it with the Star Wars games, and I even paid close to £30 for Resident Evil 4, which is probably the most I’ve ever spent on a download game.

All was well until a year later and the new Meta headset was coming out and they were doing all sorts of updates on my headset, which was fine until I realised I couldn’t remember my pseudo account; hence I lost all the games I had downloaded onto it.

To be honest, it was a throwaway bit of kit but my youngest daughter enjoyed the fruits of it so I just gave it a hard factory reset so she could at least play something on it.

Then it happened, one of the controllers broke. I asked CeX how much it would cost to repair or get a new one, I got quoted £80 (the same as I’ve been quoted for a HDMI repair on my Xbox Series S).

Then my head turns to the recent PlayStation 4 I’ve been given, which is on a par (minus load times) with the Xbox Series S.

It has VR capabilities for not much more than the £80 I’ve been quoted for my Meta controller, £95 it all cost me in the end, with Move controllers and a charger for them too.

I figured, well at least if I buy the games on disc I get to keep them. So I jumped straight in.

My top two games of all time are Zelda: Ocarina Of Time and Secret Of Mana on SNES. Number three kind of bounces around over time, although I have to say Lollypop Chainsaw is an absolutely beautiful mess of a game.

So, to get to the meat of the matter.

I played Tetris Effect for the first time when I acquired my Xbox Series S on Game Pass and I never deleted that game from day one.

It is an absolutely indulgent game that borders on perfection.

Obviously, I’ve lost the game due to the console being faulty. So I decided to check it out on the PlayStation 4 through reviews online.

They were all coming back with the same response, that it was totally immersive in VR.

So I bought it and obviously played it, and I’ve got to say wow! I knew what I was letting myself in for of course.

Now most games that I consider to be in the upper echelons, I never realise it until after the fact when I’ve completed it and I look back and I become amazed.

Tetris Effect however, I realised about 10 minutes in that I was having one of the best gaming moments of my life and what I joy that was to behold.

I can’t praise that game enough.

Ocarina Of Time is still my favourite game of all time but I have to say Tetris Effect on PlayStation VR is the greatest experience I’ve ever had as a gamer and that in itself takes in a lot of territory.
