Mudwater is the trading card game of the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Yuga Labs launched it on 17 October 2026 at ApeFest in Charleston. Two players compete on a board with nine squares, each brings 14 cards, and before every match each player puts up one card as an ante, which the winner keeps. Each of the 120 cards in the first set, “Swamp Origins”, exists in print and as an NFT on Solana, and the two forms are meant to be exchangeable for each other. Holders get packs for free: at ApeFest every Ape guest received a box, additional boxes cost 99 US dollars according to attendees, and on eBay boxes are now listed from 1,684 US dollars. Here you will find everything on the rules, cards, costs and roadmap, and why many collectors take a critical view of the model.
Key takeaways
Launched on 17 October 2026; the first set, “Swamp Origins”, has 120 cards in five levels from Common to Legendary. A match takes around ten minutes: 3 × 3 squares, 14 cards per player, and whoever holds more squares wins and takes the opponent's ante card. 10,000 boxes of 24 packs with 10 cards each; 71.34 percent of them go to Bored Apes and Mutant Apes as a community airdrop: as packs to the wallet and as a box for apes at ApeFest. Claim until 19 January 2027: 10 packs per Bored Ape, 2 per Mutant Ape. Opening a digital pack costs 8 USDC; every NFT trade carries a 2.5 percent royalty plus 2.5 percent for ApeCoin purchases. The cards are printed by Orange Cap Games, a company in which Yuga Labs itself holds a stake. What is Mudwater?
Mudwater is a trading card game set in the swamps of the Everglades, on the docks where, according to the game's lore, people have always played for cards. It is Yuga Labs' first card game and the company's first collection on Solana. Every card exists twice: as a token on Solana, backed by a printed card in a vault, and as a physical card. According to the official site, you will be able to have the card shipped to you from the vault and, after verification, swap printed cards back into a token; the conversion is marked as coming soon.
According to the Bored Ape Gazette, the cards are printed by Orange Cap Games. The company, founded by Spencer Gordon-Sand, bought the Moonbirds NFT brand from Yuga Labs in 2025, as Decrypt reported. In June 2025, Yuga and 1kx led a 3.5 million US dollar funding round for the company, according to NFT Plazas. In other words, Yuga holds a stake in its own printing partner.
Mudwater arrived without much advance notice. Yuga released it during ApeFest with a post on X, shortly after every Bored Ape and every Mutant Ape had received a so-called Totem in its wallet, which unlocks the claim.

Mudwater rules: how the card game works
A match takes around ten minutes and, according to the official rules, follows a few steps:
Choose your hand: Each player picks 14 different cards from their collection, with no card number appearing twice. For beginners, the recommendation is five Level I cards, three Level II, two each of Levels III and IV, one Level V and one of your choice. Ante: Your opponent draws one of your cards face down and sets it aside. You play with 13 cards. At the end, the winner keeps the loser's ante card and gets their own back. Turns: On your turn, you take exactly one action. Place: put a Level I card face up on an empty square. Rock: put any card face down on an empty square; it captures nothing, cannot be captured and counts as Level I for upgrades. Each player can have at most one uncovered Rock on the board; once it has been built over, a new one may follow. Upgrade: place a card exactly one level higher on a square you own. Pass: only when no move is possible. Capture: Every card has a number on each of its four sides. When a card is played face up, its numbers are compared with those of the adjacent opposing cards, not diagonally. The higher number wins the square, and on a tie everything stays as it is. There are no chain reactions: a captured card does not capture its neighbors along with it. Scoring: The game ends when the ninth square is filled or when both players pass one after the other. Every square with your marker counts as one point, and more squares win.In Advanced Mode, ties are decided by the cards' families: Club beats Mutant, Mutant beats Cosmic, Cosmic beats Arcana, Arcana beats Club. You can play with printed cards, a playmat and beads, or in Otherside, where demo cards are used for now.

Every card belongs to one of four families: Club, Mutant, Cosmic or Arcana. Besides the standard edition, there are foil and serialized variants. The rarest form is a serialized one-of-one “Cracked Ice” card, and there are eight of them. According to the official site, Yuga will hand out serialized packs at random 30 days after the first claim.
Mudwater packs, boxes and distribution
A pack contains 10 cards, a box 24 packs and a case 10 boxes. The same bundling works with tokens: 24 pack tokens make one sealed box token, 10 box tokens make one case token, and each unit can be traded separately.

The eBay figures are asking prices, not completed sales. Even so, the gap to the retail price is wide: even the running auction stands at twelve times the ApeFest price. If you buy, treat this as a collector's price from the first few weeks, not as a fixed value. Digital packs and cards sit in a Solana wallet, and larger values belong on your own hardware wallet. Where to buy NFTs and what fees the marketplaces charge is covered in our NFT marketplace comparison.
What Yuga has announced for Mudwater and what is still to come
Since launch: pack claims, token trading on OpenSea, demo matches in Otherside, printed boxes for ApeFest guests. BMW promo card: Every ApeFest guest received the card “Blissfully Unbothered” at the entrance, showing the club mascot Curtis in front of a covered BMW, as the Bored Ape Gazette reports. Serialized packs: handed out at random 30 days after the first claim. Converting between printed and digital: marked as coming soon on the official site. Real cards in Otherside: coming soon; for now, matches there are played with demo cards. Live sales: From 6 November, the club also sells Mudwater in its own live shows on the US platform Whatnot, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 to 5 pm Pacific time. In Central Europe that means midnight to 2 am in the early hours of Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; the first show runs in the early hours of Saturday, 7 November. Claim deadline: 19 January 2027, 00:00 UTC.

Mudwater under fire: Solana instead of ApeChain, 8 dollars to open a pack
However well the boxes are selling, the concept behind them raises questions that we, as holders and collectors, have been hearing since ApeFest.
Why not ApeChain? In 2024, the ecosystem launched its own blockchain, ApeChain, at ApeFest in Lisbon. Two years later, the club's most important new product is launching on Solana. For ApeChain, that is a signal that is hard to read any other way: what is your own blockchain for if your own club does not use it? According to DefiLlama, ApeChain had total value locked of 2.3 million US dollars in early November 2026.
Opening a pack costs more than a pack in a store. Anyone who wants to open a digital Mudwater pack pays 8 USDC. On top of that, every trade carries 5 percent in fees. For comparison: in German retail stores a booster pack usually costs 4 to 6 euros, and opening it is free. At ApeFest, according to attendees, a printed pack worked out at just over 4 US dollars, so opening a digital pack costs twice as much. Collecting lives on the moment of opening, and charging a fee for it means charging for the best part.
Launched with a post, not on a stage. The Bored Ape Gazette calls it a “stealth launch”. Many holders found out via X, in the middle of the night European time. For the most important product of the year, that is a quiet stage.
Sales in the US, collectors all over the world. The live shows run in the afternoon California time and in English. For holders in Europe, that means bidding at night and checking shipping and customs before the first bid. Collectors in Europe who want to buy cards live should compare platforms by time zone, language and shipping before they commit.
Tightly intertwined. Yuga holds a stake in Orange Cap Games, the company that prints Mudwater and bought Moonbirds from Yuga in 2025. That is not prohibited and not unusual in the industry, but collectors should know that the maker, the printing partner and the licensor are closely linked.
Is Mudwater worth it for collectors?
Mudwater is the strongest product Yuga Labs has presented in a long time. The rules are quick to learn, matches are short, and the combination of a printed card, a token in a vault and an ApeCoin levy is new. If you hold a Bored Ape or a Mutant Ape, you should claim your packs by 19 January 2027, since it costs little. If you want to buy more, factor in the fees for opening and trading, and do not take the prices of the first few weeks as permanent. Whether Mudwater becomes a game that lasts for years depends on whether Yuga lowers the fees, brings real tournaments and gets collectors in Europe involved.
