The famous doll can command high prices for collectors. So how do you know if you’re sitting on a goldmine?

Emily Young and David Joyson, from the insurance agency Homeprotect explained: “Barbie is a classic toy that has spanned generations, and her appeal shows no signs of slowing down.

“Our research found that ‘Barbie’ was the most searched term among the toy brands studied, with 368,000 average monthly searches in the UK alone.”

“In terms of resale value, Barbie is holding her own.”

Homeprotect analysed eBay’s sold listing data to find the five most popular Barbies to discover which items have earned sellers the most money this year. Here’s what they found.

Emily and David said: “The most expensive of all Barbie’s sold on eBay in the UK recently is the Barbie Meadow mares horse.

“It sold for £928. The pre-owned item was sold in its original, unopened box in pristine condition.”

The companion to Barbie, released in 2001, comes with a saddle and bridle and a long mane that can be used to create fun and fancy hairstyles.

This particular toy was kept in good condition and in its original packaging.

These tend to have a higher resell price, meaning you’re more likely to make a profit.

Many of of Barbie’s accessories can be worth good money, too, but of course, Rarity is key.

One of the “holy grails” of Barbie houses is the 1990 Barbie Magical Mansion, which is incredibly rare and can fetch several thousands of pounds.

She is also wearing a black skirt, fishnet stockings and red accessories, including a scarf, belt, and high heels.

It also comes with accompanying art supplies, including a palette and brushes.

Emily and David said: “Part of the Fashion Model collection designed by Robert Best for Mattel in 2008, this doll fetched £300 via eBay.

“Similarly, it came in its original box.”

The Sun's top tips for selling collectibles

IF you find a rare item in your attic, it can be difficult to know what to do with it and how to make cash.

Senior Consumer Reporter Olivia Marshall shares her top tips for selling your valuable collectables.

Research and Appraise

Before selling, thoroughly research your items to understand their value.

Consider getting a professional appraisal to ensure you’re aware of the current market value and any unique features that might increase their worth.

Choose the Right Platform

Select the best platform for selling your items.

Options include online marketplaces like eBay or Etsy, auction houses, antique shops, and specialised collectable fairs.

Each platform has its own audience and advantages.

High-Quality Photos and Descriptions

Take clear, high-resolution photos of your items from multiple angles.

Write detailed descriptions, including any known history, manufacturer marks, and condition.

This helps potential buyers make informed decisions.

Consider Timing

Timing can impact the selling price of your collectables and antiques.

Research trends and consider selling during peak times when demand might be higher, such as before holidays or during specific seasons.

Negotiate Wisely

Be prepared to negotiate with potential buyers.

Know your minimum acceptable price and be willing to stand firm if necessary.

However, also be open to reasonable offers to ensure a successful sale.

Following these tips can help maximise your chances of successfully selling your valuable collectables and antiques.

How to sell your Barbie dolls

There are many different ways to sell your old Barbies.

Online marketplaces such as eBay and Etsy are some of the most easiest ways to do this.

They allow you to reach an international market, meaning you’re not limited to just a UK seller.

They also give you a good way of valuing a doll or collection by viewing items that have already been sold on the site.

If you’re confident your Barbie is of high value, look at a specialist collectables auction.

Auction houses like Sotheby’s and Bonhams often hold auctions specifically for collectible toys and dolls.

But it’s important to keep in mind that there may be fees and commission charges when selling through auctions.

Other options are to go to a toy or collectable fair or to contact a collectable dealer.

These dealers have expertise in valuing and selling collectable items and may be interested in purchasing your more valuable Barbies.

As always, beware that you’re never guaranteed to make a windfall.
