More than half of Brits say they believe Keir Starmer should resign as prime minister, according to a new poll.

Researchers at Opinium have found that 54% of the public now want the Labour leader to step down from his post in No.10, compared to just 24% who want him to stay in place – and 21% who don’t know.

That’s even higher than the 45% who wanted his Tory predecessor Rishi Sunak to quit in April 2024.

That was a month before the Conservative prime minister called a disastrous general election where the Tories suffered their worst electoral defeat ever.

These findings, published in the Observer, come after a series of major challenges for Starmer, who wanted to reset his premiership this September.

In the last three weeks, deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has been forced to resign for not paying enough stamp duty, No.10′s director of strategy Paul Ovenden quit over unearthed messages he sent about Diane Abbott and US ambassador Peter Mandelson was sacked for his links over convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Meanwhile, the Tories are now calling for the Electoral Commission and the police to launch an investigation into Starmer’s chief of staff Morgan McSweeney.

The Conservatives have questioned the way political donations were handled by Labour Together, the campaign group McSweeney was previously the director of.

Labour Together was already fined by the Electoral Commission in 2021 over its handling of donations, but the Conservatives say these leaked emails show McSweeney had sought to misled the watchdog.

While deputy PM David Lammy has written this off as “muckraking” by the Tories, each of these crises has thrown doubt over Starmer’s judgement.

McSweeney was also already under pressure for allegedly pushing Mandelson to get the job in the first place, despite his past friendship with Epstein already being public knowledge.

These Tory efforts to cause more disruption to Starmer’s top team will likely be putting an already skittish No.10 even more on the edge.
