It seems Sony isn’t done increasing the price of its online gaming subscription service, PlayStation Plus. This is despite the service seemingly doing well, as more players are choosing to pay for higher tiers of the membership.
PS Plus Premium subscriptions continue to grow as Sony looks to add more value and adjust pricing
According to Sony’s recent Game & Network Services Segment meeting, the company discussed the growth of PS Plus, specifically for the Premium tier of the service. The data given showed the subscriber mix of the service change, showing good growth for its more expensive tiers.
Specifically for Premium subscriptions, FY22 (the 2022 fiscal year) saw 17% of users at that tier, followed by an increase to 19% in FY23, and finally another increase to 22% in FY24. Overall, 38% of PS Plus subscribers are Premium or Extra members.
“Subscribers are increasingly choosing our Premium and Extra tiers, which now represent approximately 38% of total subscribers,” says Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino.
In a Fireside Chat video that accompanies this presentation, Nishino discusses bringing more value to PS Plus, as well as making adjustments to its prices in select countries.
“These price increases were partly a result of increasing value we bring to the players, through the quality and diversity of content we continue to add, as well as investment in the features to improve the service further, such as player personalisation and enhanced content discovery,” says Nishino
“The PlayStation Plus service offers great value for our players, and we will continue to add more value and adjust our pricing strategy in a dynamic way to maximize profitability,” he continued.
Until Sony decides to increase the price of its online gaming service, PS Plus Essential 12-month subscriptions cost $79.99, Extra costs $134.99, and Premium costs $159.99.
