Shilo Sanders wasn’t a projected first-round pick like his younger brother, Shedeur Sanders. Both may have similar trajectories in college, from Jackson State to Colorado. But largely, Shilo was always the one who quietly worked his cleats off to live up to his family name. As his brother played QB, most eyes were stuck on him. Being a safety, Shilo never really got the attention. Even during the draft, when both he and Shedeur went through a shocking draft slide. Shilo ended up going undrafted while Shedeur did find a home in the fifth round. It was not until the 4-time NFC South Champion Buccaneers that chose to give Shilo a shot in the NFL. Now that Shilo got his much yearned-for chance among the pros, his mom already has an expectation from him.

Shedeur’s older brother couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity the Bucs gave him. “Man, look at where we’re at. Look at the whole coaching staff. It’s a really supportive coaching staff. Everybody wants to see everybody do good. Everybody on the team, we all want to see each other win. It’s a great environment to thrive in.” Shilo said after arriving in the Bucs’ rookie minicamp. When no one wanted to sign Shilo, as he went undrafted through 3 days, the Bucs took a chance on him.

That’s what makes him forever grateful to them. “They gave me a chance before anyone, so I’m forever grateful to the Buccaneers, and I’m just gonna do everything in my power to help this team win,” Shilo said. So, when Shilo was introduced to his new locker in Tampa, he couldn’t hold back on his excitement seeing the Bucs gear. In a behind-the-scenes clip shared by the Bucs’ official Instagram channel, Shilo was captured smiling throughout his first locker room tour.

After seeing his new helmet he was like “Damn” that looks so cool. He followed it up by reviewing his Bucs jersey, saying, “28 looks good.” But the one that caught our and his mom’s attention was his comment after seeing his gloves. While trying them out, Shilo said, “These feel like interception gloves.” Even his mom, Pilar Sanders, nodded in agreement on the comment box. “Yes “Interception Gloves” 👏🏽👏🏽😂😂😂.” If those really turn out as interception gloves, then no one would be happier than Shio.

Last season, he didn’t record a single interception. So, hopefully, he can get a few with those new Bucs gloves on. Actually, it’s more like he needs to get those interceptions, as Todd Bowles is yet to be fully drawn to Shilo.

Todd Bowles gives a blunt assessment of Shilo Sanders

Once Shilo was picked by the Bucs, his dad, Deion, couldn’t be more grateful to Bowles. “I’m very thankful. Tampa’s a wonderful spot. Coach Bowles is a defensive minded guy. He’s brilliant.” Deion said on Shilo’s Twitch stream after handing him the Bucs hat. Even Bowles returned some respect to Coach Prime when the Bucs opened their minicamp. “Deion understands the game. But as a father, when your sons try to make it, you’re always looking at it as a father first. As long as their dreams come true and you get to see them as a parent, that’s really the main thing you want to see,” Bowles added. Obviously, the respect is mutual between the two.

But when it came to talking about Shilo Bowles didn’t go overboard praising the 25-year-old. On the first day of Bucs minicamp, Bowles was asked to share his true thoughts on Shilo. “Like the rest of the safeties, he’s very intelligence, he’s very loud. You can hear him making calls and everything so he’s got a good grasp of things day one.” Even other rookies were full of praise when talking about Shilo’s first day at the camp. Rookie CB Jacob Parrish didn’t mince his words speaking about Shilo’s leadership skills.

“He’s very smart. He helped me a lot with the adjustments. I’m excited to work with him,” Parrish mused. While Shilo may have impressed a lot in practice, Bowles doesn’t want him to get ahead of himself. He later added, “You have to make plays in pads. That’s what it comes down to. Knowing what to do and then doing it consistently and constantly getting better every day.” Last season, Shilo finished third in Colorado with 67 total tackles, two fumble recoveries, and one sack. Those may not be the numbers that can scare NFL offenses.

However, if Shilo does manage to replicate those minicamp plays on gamedays. That’s when he would not only prove Todd Bowles right for picking him. He would also prove all of his doubters wrong who didn’t take him while he was still on the market.
