Early Mission: Impossible 8 reactions are beginning to pour in, and in a somewhat surprising turn, some are calling the upcoming Tom Cruise-led action movie more dull than anything.
What are the Mission: Impossible 8 reactions saying?
Several journalists and critics who saw the movie this past week have mentioned that the movie doesn’t have the same feeling of the past films. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich calls the film “dull and dysfunctional” in a shocking way.
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning is dull and dysfunctional in a way i didn't think this franchise was capable of. setpieces are obviously incredible, but as someone so supportive of Cruise's crusade to save the movies and whatnot this was a massive heartbreaker.
— david ehrlich (@davidehrlich) May 13, 2025DiscussingFilm’s co-owner and managing editor, Andrew Salazar, similarly didn’t like the film’s “overtly complex script” and said the movie does not feel much like the grand finale of an epic story.
This does not feel like a "grand finale" at all. Even when trying to look at the positives, this comes nowhere near the highs of the last 4 movies combined. I'm really disappointed, first time I've seen an M:I movie and felt nothing.

ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim did enjoy the movie, however, calling it a stunning sci-fi thriller, even if it relies on too many flashbacks.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING is stunning.
It starts more as a dark, grim sci-fi thriller before eventually delivering the action-adventure you expect. Cruise is as fantastic as ever.
It uses WAY too many flashbacks and the pace is imperfect, but the finale OWNS.… pic.twitter.com/jkHpfNf5xw
Along with Cruise, the cast of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning includes Hayley Atwell as Grace, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Esai Morales as Gabriel, Pom Klementieff as Paris, Mariela Garriga as Marie, Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, Holt McCallany as Bernstein, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman as Sydney, Hannah Waddingham, Angela Bassett as Erika Sloane, Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, Greg Tarzan Davis as Degas, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt.
The synopsis for the film simply reads, “Our lives are the sum of our choices. Tom Cruise is Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.”
The film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote the script with Erik Jendresen. Cruise and McQuarrie both serve as producers on the film, while David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Chris Brock all serve as executive producers.
Mission: Impossible 8 will be released in U.S. theaters on May 23, 2025, from Paramount Pictures.
