Michael van Gerwen has issued a response after a video on social media went viral showing the darts star involved in a brawl in a kebab shop.

The Dutch darting star was enjoying a rare weekend off after opting against competing in the Swiss Darts Trophy.

However, a Saturday night out appeared to take an unfortunate turn for the three-time world champion after he was involved in an ugly scuffle by the counter of a kebab shop.

The incident, which was caught on video and subsequently shared on social media, showed Van Gerwen and four other men involved in the altercation.

One of those involved appeared to be throwing punches, with Van Gerwen grappling with another figure before being pulled away from the scrap.

However, the 36-year-old was quick to play down the seriousness of the incident and insisted it had all been blown out of proportion.

‘After an enjoyable night out, we wanted to grab something to eat, and unfortunately I ended up in a situation you’d rather avoid,’ he told Darts News.

‘The man came at me from the kitchen, not the other way round, following a verbal exchange. People are making it sound more dramatic than it actually was, which is a shame.

‘As you can see, people stepped in straight away and the situation was resolved.

‘I even spoke with the man’s nephew afterwards, and we cleared the air before we left.’

Van Gerween is expected to be back in action in the week as he competes in three Players Championship events in Leicester.

The Dutchman is currently ranked 103rd on the Players Championship Order of Merit and so needs some positive results to ensure he finishes in the top 64 and qualifies for the Players Championship Finals.

And there were some positive signs of a return to form only a fortnight ago for Van Gerwen after he beat Luke Littler to win the World Series of Darts, his first televised title in two years.

‘We all know what difficulties I’ve had in the last few months, but to do it in front of my home crowd means a lot to me, it’s amazing,’ Van Gerwen told ITV Sport after the victory.

‘I’ve never been away, but I’ve had to dig really deep to do this. I love what I do. I hope this is the beginning of a lot more.’
