Donald Trump warned Mark Carney he could be shot after giving him a bizarre gift at the White House, it has emerged.

The US president gave the Canadian prime minister “something really special” at the White House last year.

Carney – whose country is now locked in a trade war with the US after relations between the two countries broke down – revealed the odd exchange in an interview.

He said: “I went to the White House in the spring of last year, and at the end of the meeting the president ‘Mark, I want to give you something really special’.

“And I opened this box and it’s this big gold key. I was like ‘wow, Mr President, this is fantastic’.

“He says ‘yeah, it’s the key to the White House. You just bring it, they let you in. And then he says ‘maybe they’ll shoot you’.”

Laughing, Carney added: “And that sort of sums of the relationship that we have.”

Trade talks between America and Canada collapsed last week, with Trump imposing 50% tariffs on imports from its northern neighbour.

Canada has retaliated with “dollar for dollar” tariffs of its own on American goods.

Carney demolished Trump last month after the president announced that he was renaming Lake Ontario, which borders the two countries, Lake America.

Hitting back on X, the Canadian PM said: ““We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

“Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.”
