Matthew Lillard‘s return to the Scream franchise came as a surprise to fans, and the actor recently opened up about what to expect from the upcoming movie, as well as his feelings on his return being spoiled.
What did Matthew Lillard say about Scream 7?
Speaking to ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese, Lillard opened up about returning to the Scream franchise after starring in the original film in 1996. Lillard said he was excited to get the call to come back, and hopes fans will be happy to see him, too.
“Yeah, I was really not gonna lie, I was pretty excited about it,” said Lillard. “I had a lot of questions for Kevin when he called. I’m excited, really ecstatic to be back. I hope fans are happy. I hope people are excited to see me, and I just hope I don’t screw it up. I mean, you know, I think people are gonna love it. And then I think the script’s great. I think the cast is fantastic, so I’m really hopeful that it’s a home run.”
Lillard also spoke about working again with Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original film and is set to direct the upcoming seventh one. According to Lillard, seeing him and Neve Campbell again was just as fun as hanging with old friends.
“Oh, great. It’s like old friends, right? And Neve’s on set, and working with Neve and seeing her is great,” Lillard said. “I think that we’re all really hopeful that… look, I think the journey continuing, I think fans are gonna be excited. It’s got that vibe of like old school Scream, and so I just think we’re all really hopeful that we’re building what the fans will love and appreciate.”
Lillard wishes his return was kept more secretive
Lillard’s appearance in the film, along with David Arquette’s surprise casting, has led to some confusion and excitement from fans. Although he wishes it could’ve been kept a secret like Arquette does, the actor said he’s not too surprised the news came out.
“Oh, yeah. Yeah. I was definitely not supposed to be announced until the trailer,” said Lillard. “But I think that we were all pretty conscious of the fact that, you know, once you start saying “Scream 7 shooting,” the people are gonna start paying attention to the general area. So sneaking me in and sneaking me out would’ve been very difficult. So eventually we broke the news ourselves before I got a chance to leak. So, it is what it is. It’s modern technology, and I don’t think anyone was unduly surprised. I’ll put it that way.”
