Whispers once said NBA kids coast on their last name. Gloria Govan just dropped the ultimatum that could prove them right. The sons of NBA veteran Matt Barnes have officially hit a big milestone—landing their first D1 college offer from the University of South Dakota. But what happens when stellar stats collide with a single “F” in the classroom?
The Barnes twins took to Instagram to announce the news via their IG stories. And their mom, TV personality Gloria Govan, reshared it with pride. “BOYS GOT THEIR 1ST D1 OFFER,” she captioned. The twins are clearly putting in the work. Both the twins have starred for the Celts over the past two seasons. Carter has appeared in 61 games—two more than Isaiah.
In his freshman season, Carter put up 7.3 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.2 steals. This season? A strong 11.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game across 30 outings. And Isaiah has been equally solid—59 appearances, 10.8 points per game overall. This season alone, he’s dropping 13.3 points, grabbing 6.3 boards, dishing out 2.8 assists, and snagging 2.0 steals a night. They’re showing growth, skill, and heart.
But here’s the twist—none of this will matter if they can’t keep their grades up. That’s not a rumor, that’s straight from their mom. “She says no grades, no sports. So grades come first,” the twins shared on the Sportsing! podcast. So what is their favorite subject? Bible and Theology. Though with a wink, added, “If any of my other teachers watch this, I’m lying.”
Even at school, they’ve earned a rep. “These two boys. Me and Derek laugh all the time. They just stay like legit. They kind of lightweight run the place a little bit,” the host joked. So why Theology?

“It’s just a cool class to be in, you know?” Barnes’ twins explained. “You get to learn about Jesus and things, things. And all the things, but all the different religions. Like, don’t you guys kind of dive into a little-bit of everything? A little-bit of everything, but it’s just like, so cool.”
So maybe Gloria can breathe easy knowing her sons are locked in—at least on one front. But then again, the Barnes twins recently did something that made their mother happy too.
Matt Barnes’ twins’ Mother’s Day tribute
So while most of the world was busy showering their moms with love this Mother’s Day, Isaiah and Carter Barnes made sure theirs felt the same. The Crespi High hoopers and sons of former Warriors vet Matt Barnes didn’t hold back, sharing some heartfelt moments with their mom, Gloria Govan, on Instagram—and the love was real.
To kick things off, Isaiah took to his story and kept it simple but sweet: “Happy mother’s day mom, I love you so much @glogovan,” he wrote. Alongside that, he shared three photos that really told the story. The first snap? A fresh click from prom night, with Isaiah and Gloria posing together in the backyard just before he headed out.
Then came a picture of Isaiah kissing Gloria on the forehead, with her smiling softly at the camera. And to top it off, a throwback that took us all the way back to the early days: baby Isaiah and Carter, cradled in Gloria’s arms, her joy practically glowing through the lens.
Meanwhile, Carter went the more minimal route, reposting a message from the “Trust God Bro” page that read, “God, thank you for my mom.” It may have been short, but it’s from the heart. Even though Gloria and Matt Barnes have gone their separate ways, but one thing hasn’t changed—Gloria’s impact on the Barnes twins’ journey.
