The Arizona Cardinals are moving toward a deal to trade wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., according to multiple reports. The former top-five selection was officially inactive for Sunday’s Week 5 game against the Detroit Lions, a move that coincided with reports of trade talks reaching their final stages.

The Houston Texans have emerged as the frontrunner to acquire the receiver, according to Pro Football Rumors. If completed, the move would reunite Harrison with his former Ohio State teammate, quarterback C.J. Stroud. While the trade has not been officially announced by either team, league sources indicate the Cardinals are seeking at least a second-round draft pick in return for the receiver.

Declining Role in Arizona

The decision to move on from Harrison follows a significant drop in production and a shift in the Cardinals’ offensive hierarchy. Through the first four games of the 2026 season, Harrison recorded just five receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown. This performance represents a sharp decline from his rookie season in 2024, when he finished with 885 receiving yards.

Under offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, the Cardinals have transitioned toward a target distribution that favors tight end Trey McBride and wide receiver Michael Wilson. Harrison currently ranks fifth on the team in targets, also trailing Kendrick Bourne and Jeremiyah Love. This mismatch between Harrison’s skillset and the current offensive scheme appears to be the primary driver behind the trade discussions.

Trade Market and Compensation

Harrison entered the league with immense expectations as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite his father’s Hall of Fame legacy with the Indianapolis Colts, local reports from Indianapolis indicate the Colts are not currently involved in negotiations. The Cleveland Browns have also been reported as a non-factor in the current trade talks.

The reported compensation package for Harrison is expected to center on a 2028 second-round pick, though final terms may include late-round selections. For Arizona, the move allows the front office to recoup draft capital while leaning into the personnel that has been more productive in LaFleur’s system. For Houston, the acquisition would bolster a receiving corps that has seen significant investment since Stroud’s arrival.

Finalization of the deal is expected early this week. Harrison remains under contract through the 2027 season, with a fifth-year option available for the team that holds his rights after the trade is processed.
