Marvel Zombies reviews are beginning to pour in, and despite some mixed reactions, people seem to be high on the Marvel Studios’ horror show that’s out on Disney+ now.
What did critics say about Marvel Zombies?
As of the time of this writing, Marvel Zombies currently sits at a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 17 reviews in. The show’s audience meter sits at 85%, a promising number for the four-episode series.
On Mortal Cinema, Luke Y. Thompson praised the show, saying that it “feels like a team-up story that’s been better set up than whatever Avengers Doomsday has in store, and gives us the interactions we’ve been wanting to see since characters like Shang-Chi were introduced.”
On Bloody Disgusting, Daniel Kurland called the show “gonzo” and “out of control,” in a series that “turns Marvel’s standard superpowered theatrics into a disturbing dystopia that celebrates horror’s desire to disrupt.” Roger Ebert’s Rendy Jones, on the other hand, wasn’t a fan, saying the show “is squandered by tonal stale safeness disguised as freshness.”
AV Club’s Jarrod Jones also wasn’t a fan, noting that the action and heroes in the film fail to live up to the chaos of the zombie apocalypse surrounding them.
Marvel Zombies will see a variety of big-named stars return, including Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man/Scott Lang, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, David Harbour’s Red Guardian/Alexei Shostakov, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, Simu Liu’s Xu Shang-Chi, Awkwafina’s Katy, Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent/John Walker, Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan, and Dominique Thorne’s Ironheart/Riri Williams.
Outside of those stars, Marvel Zombies will also feature the voice of Todd Williams, who plays Blade in place of Mahershal Ali. Other stars in the series include Hudson Thames as Spider-Man, as well as a variety of yet-to-be-announced actors.
The series is directed by Bryan Andrews from a screenplay written by Zeb Wells, who is also serving as an executive producer. It is inspired by the fifth episode from Season 1 of What If…?, in which the MCU films Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018) ended in a zombie apocalypse. In a press release, Andrews teased that the show will feature “more hardcore” and “pretty wild” zombie sequences, different from what was shown in What If…?
Marvel Zombies is set to release on Disney+ on September 24, 2025.
