Bryan Andrews, the director and co-creator of Marvel Zombies, recently explained why he and the rest of the team decided to blend Eric Brooks / Blade and Moon Knight in the MCU animated series. Andrews also discussed how Marvel Zombies became Blade’s first credited project in the franchise.

Bryan Andrews explains why Blade was combined with Moon Knight for Marvel Zombies

Bryan Andrews spoke about how Blade became the Fist of Khonshu in Marvel Zombies in an interview with DiscussingFilm, noting how the show became Blade’s credited debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by accident.

Mahershala Ali made an uncredited voice-only cameo as Blade in the post-credits scene of 2021’s Eternals. Although a Blade movie featuring Ali’s iteration of the character was announced, it has been delayed and removed from Marvel’s release schedule.

In the aforementioned interview, Andrews explained that they thought the Blade movie would come out before Marvel Zombies when they decided to add the character to their show, and that posed a problem.

He elaborated, “Sometimes you’re doing it concurrently [with the films], you have to chase whatever they’re doing in the live action and honor what they’re trying to do. That makes it really difficult. So, we wanted to free ourselves from all that.”

Ultimately, they settled on the idea of combining Blade and Moon Knight to create Blade Knight. Moon Knight already made his MCU debut in the 2022 series led by Oscar Isaac. So, the non-comics fans were familiar with the character.

“We’re like, ‘Dude, if he’s the Fist of Khonshu, then we don’t have to worry about trying to figure out what the live-action movies are doing or not doing,’ Andrews said. “Like, literally, do our own thing and create our own lore. That’s one thing [executive producer] Brad Winderbaum and I really enjoyed and wanted to achieve with Marvel Zombies,”

According to Andrews, Blade Knight developed his own personality and character traits in time, becoming “its own thing, its own lore.”

Todd Williams voices Eric Brooks / Blade Knight in the series. All four episodes of Marvel Zombies are available for streaming on Disney+.
