Mariska Hargitay May Have Confirmed Fan-Favorite Character’s SVU Return

Mariska Hargitay just broke the internet with two words and a selfie. The SVU star’s latest Instagram posts may have confirmed a long-awaited reunion that franchise fans have been hoping for.

Mariska Hargitay confirmed Christopher Meloni’s return to Law & Order: SVU through two Instagram posts on Tuesday. The SVU star shared a photo pointing at Meloni’s head on set, captioning it “Who dat?”

She then posted a smiling selfie with him, writing “Happy 600..” in a nod to the show’s upcoming 600th episode.

Entertainment Weekly officially confirmed that Meloni will reprise his role as Elliot Stabler in Season 28. The milestone 600th episode is set to air on Nov. 12. However, Hargitay did not reveal which episode will feature Meloni’s return or how many episodes he will appear in.

Meloni’s comeback follows the cancellation of his spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime, in April after five seasons. At the time, Meloni thanked fans on social media. “I wanted to take this moment to say thank you to the fans, who not only helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity, but for sticking with him and welcoming him back,” he wrote. He added, “It was a great ride. But thank you. You helped give me a career that I never dreamed of.”

Hargitay and Meloni first originated their roles as Benson and Stabler in 1999. While Hargitay remained on the show, Meloni departed after Season 12. He returned in 2021 for Organized Crime and frequently crossed over into SVU episodes.

The reunion was not entirely unexpected. Showrunner Michele Fazekas said in May that she wanted to “use [Meloni] as much as he wants.” She later explained that a return “has to be meaningful and it has to come from these characters.” Fazekas also revealed, “There were at least two times this season where I was like, ‘Hey, is he around?'”

Season 28 premieres on NBC and Peacock on Oct. 8.
