Recently, Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame have been on a roller coaster of college football news. Freeman, in his fourth year as head coach, just finished up a season that had Irish supporters on an emotional rollercoaster: a stunning early-season loss to Northern Illinois, followed by an eye-popping 13-game winning streak. While all eyes were on Marcus on the sidelines, there was another captivating family story off the field. Should you ever catch a glimpse of the Freeman crew at a game, you’ll notice they’re not simply in attendance to root for the Irish; they’re the heart and soul of Marcus’s universe. His wife, Joanna, is essentially the team’s de facto MVP, balancing football season chaos with parenting six children (six, people!). The Freeman home is a tornado of sports practice, homework, and game-day rituals

Speaking of the Freeman family, another Freeman is floating through the headlines, his son, Vinny. And suffice it to say, the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree. Vinny Freeman, Penn High School’s featured junior in Mishawaka, Indiana, has been dominating the wrestling mats. This spring, he signed to wrestle at Cornell, one of the Ivy League’s premier programs, after finishing third in the Indiana state tournament at 175 pounds and earning his 100th career win. Vinny’s choice to go to Cornell was not solely based on sports; he’s combining first-rate academics with a wrestling program that is consistently ranked among the country’s best.

Vinny Freeman is not only making headlines with his wrestling moves, which are generating buzz. Vinny’s got a little love story to tell, too. Yep, the Penn High standout isn’t only dominating on the mat; he’s also capturing hearts. Thanks in part to his totally sweet relationship with his girlfriend, Nia.

And now, if you’re following either of them on Instagram, chances are you saw the cute prom-night moment that everyone in their social circle was talking about, captioned, “prommy❤. But it was not just the picture that got everyone going, it was Vinny’s comment below. He kept it brief and oh-so-sweet: “my forever date❤.” Cue the collective “awww” from everyone pretty much everywhere that saw it.

Nia shared this photo that was essentially prom aspirations: the two of them dressed up, Vinny in a dashing tux and Nia in a beautiful red dress, both smiling as if they’d just won the state. Even though fierce in wrestling, Vinny is a softie with his girlfriend, showing their happiness together.

Nia’s post had a gazillion likes, and the comments section became a mini love-fest, with friends and teammates weighing in on how adorable they looked. You can just picture Marcus Freeman’s reaction to all this. The guy’s gone through the emotional wringer this season, but when it comes to Vinny, Marcus is a pure, proud dad. And now, he is even prouder when his son has chosen a place for himself in a different sport altogether.

Marcus Freeman’s proud and supportive take

Now this one has Notre Dame supporters on the edge of their seats for every reason possible. We’re talking about Marcus Freeman’s son, a phenom wrestler, getting offers from some of the biggest programs in college athletics. And sure, when Michigan made its pitch, you could almost hear the collective intake of breath in South Bend. But Vinny? He had other ideas. The kid shut the door on the Wolverines and said, “I’m Ivy-bound,” making it official with Cornell University.

You’d think Marcus Freeman might have mixed feelings about his son not picking Notre Dame, but honestly, the guy was just beaming with pride. “Proud of you! Can’t wait to see what’s next! #VinnysDad.” He got real about what it’s like being on the other side of the recruiting table, not as a coach, but as a dad, in a press conference. He explained that the experience did teach him a lot, particularly regarding what these young athletes and their parents are searching for. Marcus was deliberate about keeping his recruiting team informed, passing along lessons from Vinny’s experience.

Vinny explained to his father that the thing he liked about Cornell was the feeling of family. He got it with the wrestlers, the coaches, and the entire atmosphere. And who better to appreciate that than your father? “We can sell Notre Dame. We can sell our football program…we can sell this university, but at the end of the day, the young people want relationships too.”

Vinny worked for every ounce of this. He’s not merely “the coach’s son” receiving a handout. The guy ended his junior year 37-3 and in third place at the Indiana state wrestling meet. Selecting Cornell is a bet on as much brain as playing at a top program and receiving a world-class education.
