Inji Vellam brings together Mani Ratnam and Vijay Sethupathi once again
While the makers have been careful not to reveal details about the story, the first glimpses from the film have offered some clues about its world. The poster and stills released so far point towards a romantic drama, although the exact nature of the relationship at the centre of the narrative remains under wraps.
For Vijay Sethupathi, Inji Vellam marks his second film with Mani Ratnam after Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. The 2018 gangster drama featured a sprawling ensemble cast and saw Sethupathi play one of the central characters. Their reunion is therefore expected to be one of the film’s major attractions.
Sai Pallavi, meanwhile, joins Mani Ratnam for the first time. Known for performances that combine emotional depth with a natural screen presence, the actor’s pairing with Vijay Sethupathi has already generated considerable interest. The film also gives Mani Ratnam an opportunity to explore a romantic narrative with two performers known for their understated approach to characterisation.
AR Rahman continues landmark collaboration with Mani Ratnam
The technical crew reunites Mani Ratnam with several accomplished collaborators. AR Rahman is composing the music for Inji Vellam, extending one of Indian cinema’s most enduring filmmaker-composer partnerships. The film marks their 19th collaboration, beginning with Roja in 1992.
The crew also features acclaimed cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay, editor Sreekar Prasad and art director Sharmishta Roy. Action choreography is being handled by Dhilip Subbarayan. With this combination of talent, the film brings together a crew with experience across several major Indian productions.
Although the makers have revealed little about the narrative, the decision to keep the story closely guarded has added to the anticipation surrounding the project. The combination of Mani Ratnam, Vijay Sethupathi, Sai Pallavi and AR Rahman has naturally placed Inji Vellam among the more eagerly awaited Tamil films on the horizon.
Inji Vellam is slated for a theatrical release in January 2027. Netflix has acquired the film’s streaming rights, ensuring that the Mani Ratnam directorial will eventually reach audiences on the platform following its theatrical run.
