Manchester United came crashing back down to earth with a 1-0 defeat to Wolves at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United produced a miraculous comeback to beat Lyon and advance to the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday night.

But Ruben Amorim’s side were unable to build on that epic victory three days later, slipping to yet another Premier League defeat.

Pablo Sarabia’s 77th-minute goal was enough to earn Wolves a fifth straight league win and put any relegation fears firmly to bed.

It also inflicted a 15th league defeat on Manchester United – the club’s most losses since the 1989-90 campaign – and puts the Red Devils above 15th-placed Wolves on goal difference only.

Few United players covered themselves in glory against Wolves and it was another frustrating afternoon for struggling striker Rasmus Hojlund.

Hojlund, who cost United £72m, failed to make a significant impact before being subbed off with 20 minutes remaining.

Reacting to Manchester United’s latest Premier League defeat, ex-Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara said on Sky Sports: ‘It was a poor performance from them today.

‘I’m not convinced about Man United, I’m not convinced at all. I don’t know if this formation works, I really don’t.

‘They’ve got massive problems. He hasn’t got the players for the system. In the summer they need to decide whether to bring in loads of new players for Ruben Amorim or get a new manager.

‘United’s league form is unacceptable and if they don’t win the Europa League it’s a disaster of a season.’

Discussing Hojlund during the game, O’Hara added: ‘Hojlund makes a massive mess of it.

‘He’s driving through. Mainoo has made a great run. He’s in acres of space. It’s not even a hard pass and Mainoo would have a free shot on goal.

‘But Hojlund takes 20 minutes to get it out of his feet and Wolves get back to make a tackle.

‘That sums up his Man United career: not good enough, nowhere near good enough. Hojlund does nothing up front on his own.’

Amorim was asked about Hojlund’s continued struggles after the defeat and whether the Denmark international would benefit from some time out of the team.

‘If you look at the games, we have several players that missed big chances, not just Rasmus,’ he said. ‘But Rasmus, of course, the game is to score goals because he is a striker.

‘But it’s a team thing. I’ve already said that. Our team should score goals. It’s not just Rasmus that’s missing the chances, it’s all the team.’

Asked how he can maintain Hojlund’s spirits during this barren run, Amorim said: ‘The only way I know is to work on him.

‘He needs to score a goal [and] he will not score if he’s out. So I try to manage that during games. He needs to score one. That’s all a striker needs.’

Discussing Manchester United’s defeat more generally, Amorim added: ‘We didn’t score our opportunities. That’s it. We need to score goals.

‘This season is going to end like this so we need to take the positives and work on what we need to improve.

‘We have to look at everything, our squad, what we have to do in the market. We will see.

‘We talk every day about next season and with time we will get what we need to improve the team.’
