Man of Tomorrow’s Main Focus Won’t Be Superman or Brainiac

Man of Tomorrow’s Nathan Fillion has given a new hint about where James Gunn’s upcoming DC movie will place its emotional focus, and it isn’t on the hero or the incoming villain audiences might expect. The actor shared the tease while discussing his return to the franchise.

Fillion, who plays Guy Gardner in the DC Universe, reprises his role in Gunn’s 2027 follow-up to Superman. Asked whether Man of Tomorrow carries a tone similar to its predecessor, Fillion pointed to a shift in character focus rather than a shift in style.

“In the first movie, and rightly so, we learn a lot about who Superman is. In this movie, I think we’ll learn more about who Lex Luthor is, and I think it’s equally important,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

That remark suggests Gunn’s sequel will use its runtime to dig into Nicholas Hoult’s Luthor rather than centering entirely on David Corenswet’s Superman or Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac, even though the superintelligent android drives the film’s central fight.

Furthermore, Fillion described stepping back into the role as a welcome reunion. “It felt great going back. The first experience was fantastic, so it felt really cool picking up where we left off,” he said, adding that returning let him reconnect with castmates he’d bonded with on the first project.

The actor also touched on his long working relationship with James Gunn, which now spans roughly a dozen projects dating back to his 2005 audition. Fillion said Gunn’s rise in Hollywood hasn’t changed him personally, even as his projects have grown in scale.

“Yes, he’s absolutely the same guy. The only thing that has changed is the scope of his projects and the sheer number of people on his teams,” Fillion said, noting that “the caliber of the work” has evolved while Gunn’s enthusiasm for storytelling has stayed constant.

Man of Tomorrow brings Superman and Luthor together against Brainiac and it is the fourth one in the DC Universe’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Gunn wrote and directed the film. Warner Bros. Pictures will release it on July 9, 2027.
