James Gunn recently hinted at casting developments for Man of Tomorrow, likely confirming that another Superman-related character will appear in the upcoming film. His comments offered clarity on speculation surrounding the project’s expanding ensemble.

James Gunn almost confirms Superman’s Frank Grillo for Man of Tomorrow

James Gunn discussed Frank Grillo’s future in the DC Universe during his appearance on The Morning After Pod after the release of Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6.

He said audiences could “start to guess” Grillo’s involvement after watching the episode. The scene showed Rick Flag Sr. making a deal with Lex Luthor. Gunn added, “Frank talked about the next… he’s doing something else with us,” and noted fans would understand more after seeing the installment. Grillo first voiced Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos and later reprised the role in Peacemaker.

Gunn described the character as “morally flexible” and “manipulative.” He explained that Flag often acts on instinct rather than planning, which leads to major mistakes. Gunn stressed that Flag is not a villain. Instead, he is protective and vengeful, with a few weaknesses.

Gunn also tied Flag Sr.’s role to Superman 2, aka Man of Tomorrow. He said the Peacemaker episode showed “a partnership [beginning] between two, an unlikely pairing of people,” meaning Flag and Lex Luthor. Gunn stated, “This is not the end of that,” confirming continuity for Grillo’s character in the Superman sequel.

He added that Flag feels conflicted about arresting Superman. “He feels bad about the whole situation,” Gunn said, but Flag later becomes cautious of the power balance between governments, corporations, and metahumans.

Gunn explained that the larger story will explore these three structures fighting for control. He said metahumans are “doing something they haven’t done for 300 years” by asserting independence. He positioned Flag Sr. as a character who can “travel in and out of these stories” as a human tied to wider political and corporate struggles.

Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to be released on July 9, 2027.
