The actor who plays Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow has his new vampire TV show releasing on Disney+ today. Lars Eidinger, who is set to enact the classic DC villain Brainiac in the upcoming DC superhero film, stars in a dark new vampire thriller. His new show, City of Blood, is arriving on Disney+ for streaming today.
According to the official synopsis of the show, “An unbearable heat hangs over a world ravaged by climate change, where crime dominates everyday life. Berlin has become a city-state on the brink of collapse. While a privileged few live comfortably beneath a fully air-conditioned dome, the rest of the city sinks into corruption and violence.”
“The two sisters, Bea and Phoebe, were separated as children by a tragic event: Bea, now chronically ill, grows up in privileged surroundings with her adoptive mother, while her older sister Phoebe struggles to survive on the streets of Berlin. When their worlds collide once again, just ahead of a pivotal election, they make an unthinkable discovery: vampires control organized crime and are seeking political power to secure their survival,” the synopsis continues.
Per the storyline, “Blood has long since become the city’s true currency. Caught in the crossfire, Phoebe and Bea must fight not only for their lives, but also confront a haunting question-who poses the greater threat: humans or vampires?”
How Lars Eidinger’s new vampire thriller connects to Man of Tomorrow
Eidinger’s latest vampire series cleverly ties into James Gunn’s Superman: Man of Tomorrow by embracing theatrical and villainous allegories instead of a direct narrative crossover. Like the intelligent Brainiac, his political vampire character in City of Blood also reflects an expressionistic acting style.
The actor himself addressed why he went for the Brainiac role, explaining to IGN: “The theatrical quality has actually helped me enormously in the context of Superman, too, because it involves a different register of performance, one that isn’t primarily realistic and allows for a far more expressive style of playing. When I watch a film like James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, I find it has a great theatrical quality — in the handling of good and evil, and in a certain tendency toward allegory.”
He continued, “Brainiac is described as the incarnation of Satan. I find that almost Shakespearean. The king, the fool — there are so many parallels for me.”
All episodes of City of Blood have dropped for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on Wednesday, September 16.
