Mammootty is all set to return to Tamil cinema with Om: Chapter 1: Udhiram: The Blood Wood, and on the occasion of his birthday, the makers offered a first glimpse of the veteran actor’s role. The character reveal video introduces Mammootty as Burma Karthikeyan, a smuggler who appears to operate on the fringes of the law while maintaining a deep bond with the people around him.

Written and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, who earned acclaim with Amaran, Om stars Dhanush in the lead. The character video establishes Burma Karthikeyan as a man with considerable influence. Despite his involvement in smuggling, he is portrayed as someone who looks out for the people, earning their respect as well as that of the police force. The affection he commands sees him being addressed as ‘Siya’, meaning ‘The Elder One’.

The character, however, appears to be far from straightforward. In the video, Siya describes himself as gold with small traces of copper mixed in, suggesting that Mammootty’s character will carry shades of grey. The brief introduction hints at a layered role that could become an important part of the film’s narrative.

Om marks Mammootty’s return to Tamil cinema after seven years. His last Tamil outing was Ram’s Peranbu, released in 2019. The new film also brings Mammootty and Dhanush together once again, following their previous association in Proprietors: Kammath and Kammath, where Dhanush made a cameo appearance.

A Promising Ensemble and a New Tamil Chapter

Om brings together an interesting ensemble that includes Sai Pallavi, Sreeleela and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. For Naseeruddin Shah, the film marks his Tamil debut. Widely regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s finest performers, his inclusion adds another layer of anticipation to the project.

The technical crew features several established names as well as young talent. Sai Abhyankkar is composing the music and is also associated with Dhanush and Vetri Maaran’s upcoming Thamizh Murugan. Ezhil Arasu K is the cinematographer, while R Kalaivanan has been roped in as the editor. A Pannerselvam serves as the art director, with Yannick Ben and Kecha Khamphakdee handling the action choreography.

Dhanush is backing Om through his Wunderbar Studios banner and is joined in production by Shraddha Agrawal and Azmat Jagmag. RTake Studios is also supporting the project. With Rajkumar Periasamy at the helm and a cast led by Dhanush and Mammootty, the film is shaping up to be an ambitious Tamil project.

For Mammootty, Om is one of several upcoming projects that underline his continued appetite for varied roles. He will next be seen in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Padayaatra and Khalid Rahman’s Mattancherry Mafia, which also features Naslen and Asif Ali. The actor is also set to star in and produce Mela, directed by Nithish Sahadev, known for Falimy and Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimayil.

With Burma Karthikeyan, Mammootty appears to be entering yet another intriguing world, one where the boundaries between law, loyalty and morality could prove difficult to define.
