The next entry and the prequel in the fan-favorite Mad Max franchise, titled The Wasteland, is reportedly taking a huge pivot from its initial direction and will now materialize as a TV series instead of a feature-length film. The supposed decision comes in the wake of the failure of 2024’s Furiosa, which has seemingly prompted Warner Bros. to change the setting for the next live-action outing of the infamous Road Warrior.

George Miller’s Mad Max: The Wasteland film will reportedly be a TV series now

George Miller’s The Wasteland prequel is currently being reworked to premiere as an episodic series, rather than a film.

According to the Mad Max Bible podcast, the project has long been in production, with Miller initially envisioning Wasteland as a TV series only, before honing the idea as a video game. The idea once again became a topic of discussion when Miller revived the Mad Max franchise with the Tom Hardy-led Fury Road.

However, development on the movie once again stalled when Miller sued Warner Bros. over payment issues in 2017. Since then, there have been little to no updates regarding the progress on Mad Max: The Wasteland.

Moreover, Warner Bros. suffered heavy losses with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, grossing just over $174 million worldwide on a reported budget of $233 million, despite positive reviews from critics.

Taking the troubled production process of The Wasteland movie and Furiosa’s failure into consideration, Mad Max Bible’s report that the project will now take the shape of a TV series seems to make sense.

Set one year before the events of Fury Road, Wasteland expands upon the post-apocalyptic adventures of Max Rockatansky as he tries to survive in, as the title suggests, a dystopian wasteland.

While Mad Max: The Wasteland may be moving forward as an episodic series now, it remains unclear if Tom Hardy will return to play the titular character for this project.
