In early October 1904, James Joyce, and his then girlfriend of four months Nora Barnacle, left Dublin’s North Wall for central Europe. Their initial plan was to settle in Zurich, where Joyce had been promised employment in an English language school. But in Switzerland the young couple were informed the vacancy was taken.
