The live-action Lilo & Stitch remake has surpassed A Minecraft Movie when it comes to first-day ticket presales.
Disney’s Lilo & Stitch will open in United States theaters later this month. A live-action remake of the 2002 animated movie, the new film stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai and Chris Sanders as the voice of Stitch.
Per Deadline, Lilo & Stitch has surpassed A Minecraft Movie — along with all other PG-rated titles that have so far come out in 2024, such as Snow White, Dog Man, and Paddington in Peru — when it comes to first-day advance ticket sales on Fandango.
It has also claimed the number two spot when it comes to first-day ticket presales for a live-action Disney movie on Fandango, with 2019’s The Lion King still in first place.
How much is Lilo & Stitch expected to make during its opening weekend?
Lilo & Stitch is currently expected to make around $120 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. A Minecraft Movie opened to $162.7 million, though that movie’s box office success came as a massive surprise, as it was initially projected to make around $60 million.
This means the new Disney movie could stand to make even more than $120 million, should it have good word of mouth or strike a chord with younger audiences in the way that A Minecraft Movie did.
“Lilo and Stitch have captured the hearts of families for years, and now audiences can relive the magic of their story with a fresh and new heartwarming take,” said Fandango’s Jerramy Hainline said in a statement. “It is no surprise that audiences are racing to our platform to secure their tickets for what is set to be a memorable Memorial Day weekend when Stitch makes his triumphant return to the big screen.”
Lilo & Stitch will be released in United States theaters on May 23, 205, from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
