Many, many, many liberals are cheering for the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Thousands of such posts appeared on Bluesky, to the point where the site’s operators issued a warning against such celebrations. A considerable number of professors and school teachers have been seen cheering on Tyler Robinson, which is appalling whether or not you think that such “educators” should be fired. Federal employees and members of the military have applauded Kirk’s murder. And pro-assassination posts are seen on all social media.

None of this should be surprising. Ann Althouse reminds us of a connection I hadn’t made:

One must infer that the murderer envisioned himself as an antifascist hero. Presumably, he was able to see what happened to Luigi Mangione.

Good point. The temptation for a leftist to commit violence is not only philosophical. Robinson had before him the example of a young man who carried out a cold-blooded murder and became a hero to progressives. Large amounts of money were raised for his defense, and young women swooned when he appeared for court hearings. In California, a “Luigi Mangione Access to Health Care Act” has been filed as a proposed ballot initiative. Large numbers of liberals thought that Mangione had a point.

It is easy to imagine a troubled young man thinking that by assassinating a hated “fascist”–his word–he would not only become famous, but would be lionized by the people he most admired. And to a disgusting degree, that is what has happened.
