Fans worried about DC Studios‘ Lanterns release schedule can finally rejoice. Fans have been wondering for months whether all of its episodes will drop at once on HBO. James Gunn has assured that won’t be the case. Like the previous DCU TV shows, Gunn announced that Lanterns will air episodes weekly.
The American filmmaker announced the news while answering a fan’s questions on Threads. When asked what the schedule for Lanterns looks like, the DC Studios co-head simply responded, “Weekly.” Lanterns premieres on HBO on August 16, 2026, and its final episode will go live in early October. That puts the show’s finale shortly ahead of Clayface, the next film from DC Studios.
What is the DCU Lanterns show about?
Lanterns will follow Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan as they investigate a mystery on Earth. As revealed in its most recent trailer, the mystery will involve Manhunters. The series will start with Stewart training to become Jordan’s replacement as a user of the power ring. The show will alternate between two timelines, with flashbacks revealing more of Hal Jordan’s backstory, linking him to the comic book villain Sinestro.

The latest footage from Lanterns gave fans an extended look at some of the duo’s off-planet adventures. It’s apparent from the footage that Lanterns is taking inspiration from a different HBO noir mystery, True Detective. It will be the third DCU TV series, following Peacemaker and Creature Commandos.
The upcoming series will also feature a cameo from Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, reprising his role from Superman. Following its finale, the DCU will continue with Pierre returning as Stewart in Gunn’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, in 2027.
Lanterns is set to debut on HBO Max on August 16, 2026,
