Lanterns creator Damon Lindelof has finally revealed the real reason the DCU series dropped Green from its title. The latest clarification clears up previous online controversy after the showrunner made a lighthearted comment about the name change.
Speaking with IGN, Lindelof revealed that the idea of shortening the title was not his. Instead, it came from an early meeting involving another Lanterns showrunner, Tom King, with DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
“You know, I wish I could take credit for it,” the 53-year-old explained. He said the group was already calling “it Lanterns with no green on it.” He initially assumed it was simply shorthand for Green Lanterns.
“And they’re like, no, it’s just Lanterns,” he recalled. The simple name quickly won him over. Lindelof also liked that it was a one-word title beginning with “L,” similar to his acclaimed series Lost.
The Emmy Award-winning showrunner previously sparked an online controversy when he made lighthearted comments that the word ‘green’ was cut because it sounded ‘stupid.’ That remark received heavy backlash, notably from comic writer Grant Morron. Lindelof quickly issued an official apology on Instagram.
What has happened so far in the DCU Lanterns TV show?
Lanterns premiered on August 16, 2026, introducing Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart. The duo investigates a 2016’s mysterious murder case in the small town of Rushville, Nebraska.
The pilot episode establishes Hal and John’s mentor-mentee relationship while introducing a strange investigation with unearthly connections. That takes an unexpected turn before the story jumps forward to 2026. In the new timeline, the episode ends with John finding Hal’s dead body in a frozen state with his power ring missing.
Episode 2 premiered recently on August 23, 2026, and continued exploring the case in 2016, where a Manhunter is sought by a group of aliens. Meanwhile, Hal travels off-world to question Sinestro, his former mentor and a former Green Lantern.
Lanterns Episode 3 will be released on August 30, 2026, exclusively on HBO Max.
