Krewella returns after a four-year hiatus with a new album, PEAK, showcasing the evolution of their sound.
Electronic music sister duo Krewella returns from their hiatus since 2022 with a brand-new album called PEAK, along with a tour and new summits in their musical journey. Born in Houston to a Pakistani father and German-Lithuanian-American mother, their multicultural background influences their art. Always experimental, they’ve carved out their own unique sound in EDM.
Krewella became known for top hits like “Alive” and “Live for the Night” from their 2013 album Get Wet and went on to launch Mixed Kids Records in 2017. After a few years of personal struggles, Jahan and Yasmine have banded back together to explore their vulnerability and find the light in the darkness in this 12-track experience, which arrives four years after releasing The Body Never Lies.
PEAK opens with an intro, “lost in Paraty,” a cinematic, melodic entrance into their world, as they harmonize vocals that feel truly angelic, while lower-vibration synths complement them. Slipping directly into “press play,” this track keeps the same cinematic vibe and amps up the energy about halfway through, with more pop-influenced melodies.
The title track, and the epitome of their album, touches on Krewella’s questioning of the symbol of time with more existential lyricism in “The world is moving faster, and I just can’t keep up. Call me when it’s over, when I’m a particle of dust… fighting demons till the future takes it all.” Its lyrics also discuss the struggle with AI entering artistry and question the point of creating.
“Hear Me Now” drops in a bit harder, with screaming lyrics and slightly increased energy. Their voices sing “sounds like freedom,” and the drums build up to a bit more of a techno groove in the final segment that’s going to make people move. This melodic techno groove bounces straight into “Crying On the Dancefloor,” which feels a bit like moving through a video game sequence with an angelic character.
The album really starts to pick up with “Eternal,” “Falling rain,” and marking “Till It Hits” as their hardest song on the album with more of a sultry vocal entrance and harsh bass techno. “where did U go?,” “Something Sacred,” “Without You,” and “the blueprint” feel like a gentle conclusion to the album, wrapping up an beautifully adventurous journey through a more melodic and techno-centric sound for Krewella.
