The Seattle Kraken‘s injury report is starting to fill up before the regular season even gets underway.
Forward Kaapo Kakko is expected to miss six weeks after suffering a broken hand in Wednesday’s pre-season game against the Edmonton Oilers, the team announced Saturday.
The injury occurred in the first period of the 4-1 win after Kakko was slashed by Oilers defenceman Beau Akey. He exited the game and, soon after, the Kraken announced that he would not return.
Kakko, 24, was acquired by the Kraken from the New York Rangers in December 2024 and played 49 games with Seattle last season, scoring 10 goals and registering 30 points in that time.
He had just 14 points in 30 games for New York prior to his trade.
Over his six-year NHL career, the Turku, Finland, native has 71 goals and 90 assists in 379 games. He was drafted second overall by the Rangers in 2019.
The Kraken are already down key players ahead of their Oct. 9 season-opener. Defenceman Ryan Lindgren and forwards Jared McCann and Chandler Stephenson are also dealing with injuries as the pre-season rolls along.
