The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.

John Sugden’s (Oliver Farnworth) plan to live happily ever after with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) has failed in Emmerdale – which means he now has a bit of a problem on his hands.

Yesterday, Aaron and John were rushed to the hospital after John threw them both off a gorge.

Moments prior to this happening, John phoned the police and said his husband’s ex had turned up and was threatening to kill them both.

John did this because he feared that if he was sent to prison, Aaron would get back with Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley). In John’s eyes, this was quite literally his worst nightmare.

He grabbed Aaron, made a comment about how he cannot belong to anyone else, and leapt from the edge.

Robert then rushed down the hill after calling an ambulance. He held Aaron in his arms, telling him how much he loves him and praying that he survives.

In the hospital, Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) was told that Aaron was in a coma as a result of a bleed on the brain, while Robert got told that John had suffered a few broken ribs, but was going to survive.

‘Pity’, Robert said in response.

In the latest instalment, Robert’s interrogation began after his arrest. Understandably, the detective seemed reluctant to believe Robert’s claims about John and wondered if the gorge situation happened out of jealousy.

Meanwhile, John had woken up. He quickly set about spinning a story to the likes of Vic and Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), certain that Robert was responsible.

When the detective in charge got word of John now beginning his recovery, he headed over to the hospital. For a moment, he wondered whether John was actually telling the truth, questioning how Robert overpowered both him and Aaron.

But John always comes prepared, even when he’s lying in a hospital bed. He told the detective that Robert has put him in hospital before, and then provided him with dashcam footage that showed Robert attacking him with a metal bar.

Sadly, given the fact he has just spent years behind bars for murder, luck wasn’t on Robert’s side as the episode continued. He was charged with attempted murder, and poor Robert was devastated.

Back in the hospital, Vic wheeled John into Aaron’s room and gave them some time together.

As this happened, Vic was on the phone to Robert. He pleaded and begged for her to believe him, but Victoria had been sold quite the story by her other brother. She told Robert not to contact her anymore, and hung up.

During John’s moment with Aaron, his dark side resurfaced again. He told Aaron that they could’ve easily driven off into the sunset, but discovering the information about Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) has ruined that.

John knew that if Aaron woke up, Mackenzie would be the first thing he mentions. He told his husband that he still loves him, but now believes it’s best if he doesn’t ever come out of his coma.

Sounds a bit familiar, doesn’t it?

It’s very clear now that John has no intention of handing himself into the police, and if Aaron wakes up, he’s certainly not going to let his husband manipulate him into keeping quiet.

What will John’s next move be?

For this entire time, he’s been adamant that he isn’t a murderer, but with Aaron holding the key to his downfall, will he feel there’s no other option but to silence him forever?
