“Tank knows I want to fight him.” Keyshawn Davis couldn’t have explained it better. The lightweight division’s rising star made his intentions clear during the post-fight interaction with reporters. Competing in Norfolk, his hometown for the first time, the 25-year-old scored perhaps the finest victory of his young career. Over ten thousand fans gathered at the ‘Mermaid City’s Scope Arena to watch ‘The Businessman’ destroy the Argentine Gustavo Lemos within 2 rounds of their fight for intercontinental titles.
Given what he is aiming at, perhaps Keyshawn Davis needed a victory like this one. The road is now open for him to take his career to the next level. In the 135-pound weight class, the path to superstardom passes through ‘Tank’s gates. As a ranked contender, Davis can stake a claim at the remaining championship belts held by Shakur Stevenson, Vasyl Lomachenko, and Denys Berinchyk. Then, as a new development suggests, Davis can check out a challenge from Richardson Hitchins.
An unforeseen showdown invitation
‘The Clinchman’ offered a simple solution to Keyshawn Davis’ potential and upcoming quandary. “Keyshawn can come here to 140 and see me him and his weak a** brother.” It’s worth noting that the opponent Davis vanquished today had troubled Hitchins early in April this year.

The clash for the IBF title eliminator at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas ended controversially, with many questioning the scorecards. Nevertheless, the win enabled Hitchins to mount a challenge against Liam Paro‘s title. The dual with the Australian champion is scheduled for December 7 at San Juan’s Coliseo Roberto Clemente.
It was the first time since 1994, when the late legend Pernell Whittaker defeated James ‘Buddy’ McGirt, that Norfolk hosted a boxing event of such a scale. Keyshawn Davis was determined on giving his home towners the most memorable night. His brothers Kelvin Davis and Keon Davis joined him on the undercards.
He stayed true to his word, and the audience got their money’s worth. Keyshawn Davis danced around and pummeled Gustavo Lemos in the second round. However, the bigger question is whether Keyshawn Davis will pay heed to a callout that came out of the blue.
Earlier, during an interview with Chris Mannix, Davis, sharing his insights on the impending bout, revealed how, as an amateur, he used to ‘beat up’ Richardson Hitchins. So if Lemos floundered against an opponent, Davis used to knockabout, then one can only imagine what was in store for him when they would meet. ‘The Businessman’ kept his end of the deal.
Keyshawn Davis and Gervonta Davis: The next big fight in the waiting?
Post Lemos fight, when one of the reporters asked when he had any message for Gervonta Davis, Keyshawn Davis replied, “Tank, know what time it is. Tank knows I want to fight him, so send me a contract, Gervonta.”
Earlier, it seems, Davis had an interesting poser for the two lightweight champions—Gervonta Davis and Vasyl Lomachenko. But call out apart, how will a fight between ‘Tank’ Davis and Keyshawn Davis playout? Robert Meriwether, who fought on the Davis-Lemos card, has sparred both ‘Tank’ and ‘The Businessman’. Sharing his insights on a potential matchup between the two, he felt that the Olympic silver medalist might prove a tougher opponent than even Frank Martin or ‘Pitbull’ Cruz. Moreover, ‘The Businessman’ has the size advantage as well.
However, like many, he too seemed suspicious whether Gervonta Davis would be keen to take up a fight against Keyshawn Davis. Meriwether highlighted that Keyshawn Davis does not hold any championship titles currently. The fight at Scope Arena was his first main event, so he has to prove himself a big crowd puller. Lastly, the size difference could be one of the few deterrents that might discourage ‘Tank’ Davis from pursuing the matchup. So it’s on Keyshawn Davis to strive ahead and score more eye-catching victories to make his claim stronger.
