An encouraging update about the potential return of a DCU villain has been dropped by James Gunn. Although he stopped short of confirming any specific plans, his comments suggested that the fan-favorite antagonist might show up soon.

Maxwell Lord’s return question answered by James Gunn

James Gunn recently shared a promotional clip for Supergirl on Threads. In the comments, one fan took the opportunity to ask him whether he knows when Maxwell Lord will appear next, hoping to see more of the character. In response, the writer-director simply said, “Yes, I do.”

Gunn generally responds to fans and shares small details about the projects he’s working on at the time. However, he refrained from revealing details about Maxwell Lord’s future. The character last appeared in Peacemaker Season 2, where he was trying to recruit new members for the Justice Gang. If he continues working with the superhero team, Maxwell is likely to appear in Man of Tomorrow.

Previously, Pedro Pascal played Maxwell Lord in DCEU’s Wonder Woman 1984. After the franchise was rebooted, Sean Gunn took over the role. The actor also voices GI Robot and Weasel in the DC animated show Creature Commandos.

Although Gunn didn’t offer any hints about Maxwell Lord’s next appearance, DCU’s next project, Supergirl, arrives in theaters on June 26, 2026. It is an adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s book miniseries, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock is playing the titular hero. She will be joined by Jason Momoa as Lobo, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, with David Corenswet making an appearance as Superman.

DC also has several projects in the development. Following Supergirl’s release, two HBO Max series, Lanterns and Clayface, will premiere later this year. Beyond that, a Gorilla Grodd show and a Batman movie are also in the pipeline, according to DC co-CEO Peter Safran. Ultimately, these projects are expected to build toward a DCU Justice League movie.
