Kelvin Gastelum missed weight yet again, and by a significant margin.
The 24-fight UFC veteran stepped on the scale five pounds over the non-title middleweight limit ahead of his scheduled Noche UFC matchup with Dustin Stoltzfus on Saturday.
Gastelum weighed 191 pounds, while Stoltzfus came in at 185.5 pounds.
The UFC announced Gastelum will forfeit 35 per cent of his purse to Stoltzfus and the fight will proceed at a catchweight.
UFC on Sportsnet
Featherweight contenders Diego Lopes and Jean Silva meet in the main event of Noche UFC. Watch UFC Fight Night action on Saturday on Sportsnet 360 and Sportsnet+ with coverage beginning at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.
The 33-year-old has bounced between the 170- and 185-pound weight classes throughout his UFC tenure. Gastelum is coming off a UFC 316 loss in June to Joe Pyfer ahead of which he successfully hit the 185-pound limit.
Gastelum broke into the UFC back in 2013 after winning The Ultimate Fighter 17 as a middleweight before dropping down to welterweight following his run on TUF 17. It didn’t take long for Gastelum to begin having issues making the 171-pound limit for non-title welterweight contests.
He missed weight ahead of a fight with Nico Musoke in 2014, then missed by nearly 10 pounds before he fought Tyron Woodley to a split decision in 2015 and later that year had a bout with Donald Cerrone cancelled the day before UFC 205 due to his weight-management issues.
Gastelum missed again prior to his win over Johnny Hendricks in 2016. Afterward, he was forced by the UFC to move up a division after the third weight miss early in his career.
He eventually had a successful run at middleweight and earned an interim title shot against Israel Adesanya in 2019, a bout that was inducted into the fight wing of the UFC Hall of Fame earlier this year.
Gastelum is just 3-7 over the past six years, though, and his weight issues have resurfaced.
In his lone 2024 outing, Gastelum’s scheduled welterweight contest with Daniel Rodriguez was changed to a middleweight bout after he was having difficulty cutting down to 170 pounds. Gastelum had been coming off a submission loss to Sean Brady in December 2023, which was a welterweight contest for which Gastelum made weight. That was his lone fight below the middleweight division since 2016.
Stoltzfus has alternated wins and losses over the past three years and is 3-6 overall in his UFC career. He is coming off a unanimous-decision loss to Nursulton Ruziboev in May.
All other fighters scheduled to compete Saturday at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio successfully made weight on their first attempt.
