Katie Thurston gives breast cancer update
On Tuesday, May 6, Thurston took to her Instagram Stories to discuss the difficult side effects of her treatment. She revealed that monthly hormone-blocking injections suppress estrogen and progesterone. This has triggered menopause symptoms like hot flashes and extreme fatigue.
“Slept like s— because I’m now in medically induced menopause, which means I get hot flashes,” she shared. Thurston also admitted struggling with severe dehydration, saying, “My lips have been chapped for what feels like two weeks straight.” She emphasized the challenge of staying hydrated, joking, “Tired AF from menopause and dehydration AF from medication.”
Beyond menopause symptoms, Katie Thurston gave a sobering update on her breast cancer from a recent doctor’s visit. She revealed via her Boobie Broadcast channel that more than 10 of her lymph nodes have been affected which is an indicator of advanced cancer spread.
“That’s a lot and puts me at risk for lymphedema,” she explained. Lymphedema, a chronic and often irreversible condition, can cause severe swelling and is frequently associated with cancer treatments that involve lymph node removal.
Thurston remains uncertain about the extent of surgery she may need. She wrote, “How many lymph nodes will need to be removed… but still good to continue to build a list of questions to help aid my decision.” (via People)
While surgery is still on the horizon, Katie Thurston is focusing on educating herself and raising awareness. Her open dialogue about medically induced menopause and related complications brings attention to often-overlooked aspects of cancer care, especially for younger women.
