Double trouble at the Colorado Buffaloes! The QB room is just a big void ahead of the 2025 season. With Heisman winner Travis Hunter and ‘Legendary’ Shedeur Sanders going to the NFL, head coach Deion Sanders must be quick to choose a starting quarterback. Now, the QB1 battle is open for competition in the spring this year. Julian Lewis, who redshirted last year, is seeing some physical improvement as he works to get that spot. But there’s a twist. He hasn’t played a single snap in college football. But there’s more…

Julian Lewis isn’t your ordinary Joe. He has been sitting behind Shedeur Sanders, observing the game. But he comes in as a 4-star recruit, with 11,010 total career yards in high school. He has also consistently scored 48 touchdowns in his junior, sophomore, and freshman years, bagging a total of 144 TDs. Cherry on top – last season, he’s had time to acclimate, learn, and develop into the Buffaloes’ mindset. Now, as he fights for the QB1 spot with Kaidon Salter, his father acknowledges how the program has helped in his development.

Carrollton HS QB Lewis received a big blow to his throwing arm in December 2024, in a game against Hillgrove. Following months of treatment and recovering at a slow place, his father, T Carlton Lewis, posted an update. He took to X, saying – “God is good! To witness his mental and physical growth from Jan to Apr is amazing. He’s up to 200lbs, healthy and moving better than ever. CU sports medicine, nutrition and strength have done an amazing job. #TrustGod and #TheProcess.” As of now, 247Sports still records his weight as 190 lbs. However, the QB1 race is in full swing, and Lewis is giving it his best to carry the baton onwards from Shedeur.

Now, not only the QBs, but Deion Sanders is also in a dilemma to choose the best. “They’re getting better and better,” said Coach Prime. “They’re starting to understand the system. It’s tougher on (offensive coordinator) Pat (Shurmur) and our offensive coaches because you have two different types of quarterbacks. You’re pretty much calling in two different offenses. When this guy’s in, you call it this way. When this guy’s in, you called it that way.” However, Sanders seems to have big plans for Lewis.

Deion Sanders has a plan in motion for Julian Lewis to win QB1 spot

This race is not one-sided. Lewis is facing off against Kaidon Salter, an experienced transfer. The narrative is beginning to sway to Salter’s side, although there’s not much chatter about it. But Lewis’ poor spring game and Salter’s rise in the QB battle led the media to think that something big is happening.

A reporter asked Deion Sanders if Lewis will have to redshirt this year as well. Sanders replied animatedly, and instantly, “Who you, who you, who did you hear say that? Who? Who? Who?” Sanders demanded. But after the reporter tried to give more context, the locals sternly and soundly, that Lewis is still in the fight. “Self-explanatory,” Sanders said. “Nobody said that, man. Nobody said that.”

Salter, on the other hand, has seen 4 seasons and already totaled 5,889 total yards. He’s been a top performer at Liberty for the past three seasons. But now that Lewis is coming back on the gridiron, Colorado fans, take a seat and get ready for some action for that one QB spot.
