Washington — A federal judge in California has ordered six federal agencies to consider reinstating probationary employees who were dismissed last month, ruling that the actions taken by the Office of Personnel Management were unlawful.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup issued this ruling in response to a lawsuit filed by a coalition of unions against the Trump administration. He stated that neither OPM nor its Acting Director Charles Ezell had the authority to mandate such terminations across various agencies.

The decision provides relief for dismissed workers at the Departments of Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Defense, Energy, Interior, and Treasury.

“It is a disappointing day when our government dismisses capable employees under the pretense of performance when they know full well that is a falsehood,” Alsup remarked following a hearing regarding the unions’ request for a preliminary injunction. “Such actions should not occur in our nation. It was nothing more than a ruse to circumvent legal obligations.”
