If there’s one move from last offseason still making waves, it’s the historic, headline-grabbing $765 million deal between Juan Soto and the Mets. The superstar slugger’s jump from the Yankees to a cross-town rival stunned fans, especially after his stellar season in pinstripes. Soto’s standout season aligned perfectly with the Yankees’ journey to the World Series. But what if his entire contribution to the title run is suddenly up for debate?

Yankees fans didn’t quite enjoy Soto’s decision to leave the team he once called home. They were counting on him to be there alongside Aaron Judge for another title push this year. The boos he faced in the Bronx clearly reflected how fans felt.

Soto’s performance last season was so good that his early struggles with the Mets made him look like a completely different player. The flood of offers during free agency alone was enough to prove his worth after the 2024 season. But now, one MLB insider is throwing shade at his role in the Yanks’ World Series journey.

Appearing on WFAN Sports Radio, Keith McPherson shared, “I’m so tired of hearing that Juan Soto carried the Yankees to the World Series. Why didn’t he win ALCS MVP? Come up with something else.” It’s a strange claim – one that feels like a direct jab at Soto’s near betrayal of the Yankees.

Keith says, despite Mets fans’ belief, Yankee fans aren’t missing Juan Soto.

Over 157 games with the Yankees, Soto put together one of the best seasons of his career. He hit .288/.419/.569/.989 and scored 41 home runs and 109 RBIs. There’s no denying his impact on the Yankees’ success, but like McPherson said, it wasn’t a one-man show.

After winning over the Guardians, Giancarlo Stanton was the one who took the ALCS MVP  home. Even though Soto bested Stanton in OPS and WPA, Stanton stood out for his series’ overall run production (SRC and RBI). Still, measuring Soto’s value solely by the MVP trophy feels narrow.

This isn’t the first time McPherson has aimed at Soto. At one point, he claimed Soto might not be settling in well with the Mets. “There is enough evidence to say ‘MAYBE JUAN SOTO ISN’T HAPPY AS A MET.'” Based on how Soto had played so far, it’s a fair observation. His usual swagger, impact, and numbers just weren’t there.

But Juan Soto pushed back on that narrative, and now he’s been proving them wrong with his bat.

Mets finally see the Soto they paid for

Juan Soto’s first two months had fans wondering if the $765 million deal was worth it. But after the series sweep of the Rockies and Nationals, the difference in his game is starting to show. You can’t ignore the rise in his confidence.

The Dominican slugger’s bat has started to make noise, this time, more steadily. He entered the month of June with a .219/.345/.448/.792 slash line, but just two weeks in, there is already a mile’s difference.

He’s off to a red-hot start this month, hitting .378/.549/.784/1.333 with 4 home runs and 8 RBIs in just 11 games.

Some nights were definitely special than others, take the second game against the Nationals, for instance. When the Mets took it for 5-0, what stole the spotlight was Soto’s 408-foot blast. It was his 5th homer in the last 12 games. A dramatic turnaround from his early-season slump, and the Mets have every reason to believe he’s back for good.

Even the skipper weighed in for Soto. “It’s the rhythm he’s in right now,” mentioned manager Carlos Mendoza to The Athletic. You can just see it — he’s relaxed, he’s tracking pitches, and when he connects, it’s loud,” he added. This is exactly what the Metsies were waiting for.

Soto is starting to look more and more like himself. And if the Soto Shuffle makes a comeback, too, it could quiet all the early-season frustration in Queens.
