J.P. Morgan Asset Management has identified a shift in the fixed income landscape, noting that investors can now secure yields of approximately 6.5% in high-quality corporate credit. This environment has emerged as bond yields reach levels that compete directly with equity earnings-to-price ratios, offering a potential hedge against the high concentration seen in AI-driven technology stocks.
The current yield environment follows significant movement in the government debt market. The 10-year Treasury yield reached a 24-year high of 5.36% on October 7, 2026, before settling at 5.24% on October 9. This volatility was underscored by the Federal Reserve’s action on September 16, 2026, when it implemented a 25-basis-point rate hike.

Portfolio Composition and Credit Resilience
The JPMorgan Core Plus Bond Fund ETF (JCPB), which manages nearly $16 billion in assets, serves as a primary vehicle for this strategy. Analysis of the fund’s holdings as of August 31, 2026, shows that more than 75% of its portfolio is allocated to debt rated BBB or higher. This indicates that the 6.5% yield targets are being achieved within the investment-grade bracket rather than by moving into lower-quality high-yield or “junk” bonds.
While the strategy is positioned for a rotation into fixed income, the JCPB fund has faced challenges from persistent market volatility throughout 2026.
The Role of AI Infrastructure Debt
The rise in long-term rates has been partially fueled by heavy debt issuance from major technology “hyperscalers.” Four major hyperscalers issued $194 billion in new debt during the first half of 2026. This capital was largely directed toward financing AI infrastructure, contributing to a supply of corporate bonds that has helped push yields higher.
This issuance trend, coupled with the recent 25-basis-point increase by the Federal Reserve, has reshaped the yield curve. For investors, these factors have created a scenario where high-quality debt provides returns that were previously unavailable without taking on significant credit risk. Whether these 6.5% yields remain sustainable depends largely on the Federal Reserve’s next moves in late 2026 and whether the recent peak in Treasury yields represents a long-term ceiling for the market.
