Australia secured a 1-0 lead in their three-match series against South Africa on Monday, completing a 214-run victory at Kingsmead in Durban. The win was driven by a career-best performance from Josh Hazlewood, who dismantled the South African batting order on the final day to move into the top tier of Australia’s all-time wicket-takers.
South Africa, set a target of 421 for victory, were bowled out for 206 at 1:30 PM local time. While Aiden Markram provided significant resistance with a patient 75 off 237 balls, the Proteas’ lower order suffered a rapid collapse. The home side lost their final four wickets for just five runs in the space of 16 deliveries, abruptly ending the contest on Day 5.

Hazlewood Surpasses Wicket-Taking Milestone
Hazlewood’s second-innings figures of 6/49 represented a career-best in Test cricket, contributing to a total of eight wickets for the match. The performance also saw him reach 311 career Test wickets, surpassing Brett Lee (310) to become Australia’s eighth-highest wicket-taker in the format.
The pace bowler’s ability to extract movement on a wearing Durban pitch proved the difference after Markram and the South African middle order had threatened to take the game deep into the final session. Hazlewood’s clinical spell during the final hour ensured Australia capitalised on the pressure built throughout the match.
Renshaw’s All-Round Contribution
While the bowling attack finished the job, Matt Renshaw was named Man of the Match following a dominant return to the national side. Renshaw anchored the Australian innings in both turns at the crease, scoring 190 in the first innings and 82 in the second. His contribution was not limited to his batting; the occasional spinner also claimed his first two career Test wickets during the match.
The victory marks a successful start to Australia’s first Test tour of South Africa in eight years. The visitors now look to clinch the series in the second Test, which is scheduled to begin on October 18 in Gqeberha.
