One is forced to think. Devin Haney had already secured a victory. So, had Ryan Garcia drubbed Rolly Romero, then could things have been different? The much-talked-about rematch between the two wouldn’t have hung in the balance as it does now, right? The problem is, as much as Garcia ruined its chances by suffering a humiliating loss to his former sparring partner, Haney’s lackluster performance didn’t help either.

Last year on April 20, Haney and Garcia met for a momentous clash at New York’s Barclays Center. After knocking down Haney three times, Garcia won the fight by a majority decision. But his happiness was short-lived. His failure to clear drug tests resulted in a year-long suspension and financial penalties. Additionally, the match decision was overturned to a no-contest. Garcia’s indiscretion reverberated outside when Haney filed a lawsuit against him. So with so much happening, most agreed. To set the record straight, there should be a rematch between the two. As the new year kicked in, Haney-Garcia 2 became increasingly likely until the Times Square ‘Fatal Fury‘ put a damper on hopes. In the latest episode of ‘JRE,Joe Rogan didn’t sound too hopeful either.

Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney II: No one looks forward to

Joe Rogan was joined by comedian Tom Segura on his podcast. With some ten minutes left in the show, Rogan and Segura picked up last year’s Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney. Speaking about the May 2 event, the UFC commentator pointed out how Garcia bounced back from the KO loss to Tank Davis by defeating Haney, only to later suffer a decision loss to Romero. To what end, though? The Haney-Garcia rematch might be at risk. Rogan pointed out, “They were going to, like, set up a big rematch. Now, nobody wants to see the rematch.” Maybe a rush of thoughts caused Rogan to blurt it out. “Because they both lost,” he said before correcting himself promptly, “Well, actually, Devin didn’t lose. He won a decision.” However, the win seemingly extracted a price, it seems. The fight received a lukewarm response.

Things didn’t get better for Ryan Garcia either. Most expected him to sail through Rolly Romero’s challenge with ease. But in the end, fans witnessed a confused Garcia, who could barely make any use of his famous weapon, the left hook. Instead, his opponent used it to perfection and knocked him down in the second round before cruising to a unanimous victory.

But hang in there a little longer

May 2 may have opened a Pandora’s box of questions that cast doubt on the relevance of the Garcia-Haney rematch. But still, a few want the two to get back in the ring for one last dance. It looks like there might be some hope for them.

While speaking about the chances of a rematch with Garcia, Devin Haney’s father, Bill Haney, told Ariel Helwani, “Right now we’re expecting the same thing that we agreed to…the October date and whipping him.

Helwani asked the question that many were curious about. Whether the results of the main event on May 2 affected the rematch. Haney Sr. replied, “It didn’t affect us.” However, he added, “It didn’t affect the way that we look at him… I think they’ve already done promotion for the fight leading up to it… We’ve spent time negotiating that fight, and for all intents and purposes, we believe that that’s the next fight.

So as of now, the fate of the Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney rematch is up for grabs. As days pass, fans should get a clear picture of what’s going to happen. But there remains a bigger question.

Do you really want to see the Garcia-Haney rematch after what occurred on May 2?
